Engine, Gearbox, Diff questions... older RWD stuff

Postby Snoozin » Tue Aug 09, 2005 9:43 pm

Ok then, these are on behalf of my flatmate.

He has an RX30 Cressida, currently running an 18R, looking to transplant an 18RG. We've sourced one in a complete car, however it is an 18RGEU, the EFI version of the above obviously.... has another couple of juicy bits as well!

Question 1: Are the EFI variants much different to the carb option - I assume we will require an electric fuel pump as an EFI engine wouldn't come with a mechanical one as per a carb motor - and are there any other major differences that would hinder a twin carb setup being transferred to this motor?

Ouestion 2: W55 vs. W50 gearbox. The W50 is what the RX30 currently has in it, the potential donor car has the W55.... any advantages to be gained by switching to the W55 (apart from strenght) ie. are the gear ratios likely to be shorter etc.

Question 3: This donor car ALSO has an "F" code diff, which to my belief signifies an LSD am I correct? As it has IRS, the complete setup is no use in the RX30 Cressida, BUT can the LSD diffhead etc. be transferred to the Cressida? I can find out the diff in that if necessary!

Question 4: Has anyone reconditioned an 18RG before, and what sort of coin does this command (ballpark figures for parts only please!)

Thanks, I hope someone out there can help!

Richard.

Just on the gearbox side of things, have a look here:
http://www.club4ag.com/faq%20and%20tech ... rboxes.htm

You'll save a little weight with the W55 being an alloy cased box (only 5kgs or so according to that page) and you'll gain a little strength. Seems to be shorter gears in the W50. Either box should stand up to an 18R easy enough so go for the ratios you want/need.

on the diff side of things F code stands for 7.5 inch crown wheel and no the diff head from an irs can not be used in a solid state rear axle but the crown and pinion can, not much use but still handy to know i spose!
The list so far
Te71, Ae82, Ke70x2, Mx73x2, Ga61, Gx61, Ra63, Aa63, Ae70, Ae85, Ke25, Ke30, Ke36, Gz10x2, Hb11, Ta40, Ma45......

the complete internals of the irs 'F' series will fit into a solid axle.i put the complete lsd unit with crown and pinion, from a celica supra or some thing like that into my solid axle, also put several lockers and open diff centres between irs and solid. it will only be a lsd if the code finishs in a 3 or 5. eg; F283 of F285 if it finishes in a 2 or a 4 its open. 2 means 2 spider gears while 4 means 4 spider gears. yip youll have to put the electric fuel pump in aswell,if running fuel inj but thats pretty simple.

W50, R:-4.039, 1st:3.287, 2nd:2.043, 3rd:1.394, 4th:1, 5th:0.853, 40kgs
and
W55, R:-4.091, 1st:3.566, 2nd:2.056, 3rd:1.384, 4th:1, 5th:0.850, 35kg
