EE90 To 4AGE or 4EFTE? goin in the 1990 XL Rolla

Postby Primo » Wed Aug 24, 2005 10:57 pm

I 've got and EE 90 at the momnt and i decide i will keep my car and do some changes on it

I come up with ideas that i could put 4age or 4agze

I was wondering how much does engine cost (range...) + box

and Im kind da lost i have searched about 4age black top and red top

I was thinking black top is better than the red top

I also searched cert for putting those engine into the car it didnt tell clear answer (one post that was talking about putting 4age into ae85)

Another one if i put 4agze engine in do i need brake system and ecu? is it same as 4age

If it needs one how much would it cost and if i need to ring up cert ppl can i possibly grab a fone number around wellington please

thank u very much for your help

I took a serious look at doing this with my EE90
Talk to EE904AGE about it... he's done it but said it was a hell of a lot of work.

Read some of this if you like:

http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=29146&start=0

I did a bit of research into it and a 4E-FTE does sound like an easier option, and suprisingly not many people seem to have done it.

Bring the 'rolla beast to a meet sometime :D People there are a wealth of knowledge.

I've just taken a red top out of my old FXGT shell and dropped it into an EE90 shell, the only tricky part was that the drivers-side engine mount was approx 15cm further back on the EE90 shell (for the 2E motor) than on the FXGT (for the 4AGE). We just ended up cutting the mount out of the FXGT and welding it into the EE90, didn't take too long.

Other than that it is just a matter of finding places to mount the brackets etc that the 4AGE requires and sorting out wiring (my current headache :? ). My advice is to get as much of the wiring loom out of the donor car as possible to make life easier on yourself. Bear in mind that the standard red top computer has 3 plugs, two from the engine loom and one from the dashboard loom, so you might need to change the dashboard loom. Or run the engine off a Link Plus or Motec and leave all your existing wire in-place  . You may also need to put in a different fuel pump - I just swapped tanks between cars to make it easy.

Dunno the regs surrounding certs but you'll probably need to upgrade brakes and possibly suspension. Again since I had a complete donor car I just took everything straight across so it shouldn't be an issue for getting cert. Everything is pretty simple suspension-wise between the two cars, the only real differences I found was the EE90 one smaller suspension arm on the rear suspension (which I had to change to suit the disc-brake hubs) and the front sway bar has a different mounting point.

EDIT: just read the above posts' link, I agree with everything they said about the conversion. Unless you pick up an AE92 FXGT that has been crashed and just cannibalise it for all the parts you need it may be easier to just go with a 4E variant.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

Thanks for ur replys

and i figure out that 4efte bolts on straigt into a car where as 4age needs no move the engine foward a bit in the drivers side rite?

I rekon black top 20v is faster than 4efte, i might be wrong i havn drivn 4efte b4 so.,.....

N if i put 4age engine + suspension + box then i can get away with cert?

it was from 1.3L 12v to 1.6L 20v???? so wouldn it be quite a lot of difference? Also putting Brake and fuel pump... can i get away with it?

hmm another thing... how much are the 4age 20v black top or 4efte and how much cert cost???

The guy in my work said one of his mate can do it for 350~450....hmmm

Thanks again for ur replys and.. i just need bit more help :) thnks

last time i checked, it takes slightly more effort than that. Unless you know what your doing, id urge you to go for the 4e swap

Primo wrote:I rekon black top 20v is faster than 4efte, i might be wrong i havn drivn 4efte b4 so.,.....

4efte vs blacktop 20v, id say they are pretty equal, in stock comparason's. Then wind up the boost on the 4efte and see who's quicker then ;)

Primo wrote:N if i put 4age engine + suspension + box then i can get away with cert?

Nope, you have increased the displacement, changed the suspension, increased the power output by more than 20% (well, going off the specs toyota gave, not what a bt actually makes). So youll still need a cert :)

Primo wrote:it was from 1.3L 12v to 1.6L 20v???? so wouldn it be quite a lot of difference? Also putting Brake and fuel pump... can i get away with it?

to bad the legal tegal dont look at it that way, going from a 1.3 to a 1.6, in their eyes is the same as going from a 1.3 to 6.3, still swapping the engine.

Primo wrote:hmm another thing... how much are the 4age 20v black top or 4efte and how much cert cost???

Same price, around $300 if i remember >.>

Would seem about right, bit lower than $450. but meh, ask for a price first.

Id suggest the 4efte.. you can get them hauling pretty easily (in comparason to the 20v), and they run on the sniff of an oily rag.

Thanks very much for ur reply up there and i guess black top 20v engine + G/Box will cost me around 800 bux but 4efte will cost me around 1500 + intercooler + Exaust pipe

I havn really sorted the cert.............. not sure yet... thos sorry

cuz my mate he goes to wel tec n he said if the suspension brake and engine was staight out from Corolla FXGT not after markets then it will be ok to not get a cert b cuz it was produced in same line...n goes in to corolla

n.. he recommands 4age cuz. windin up boost will shortn up the life + more hassle in the engine and they r slow or quite equal to 4age so.. i guess cost wise dunno am i got rite price for 4efte?

Maybe ya need to learn a bit/alot more before ya undertake a big engine conversion, understand what does what and what happens if ya do this, and I wouldnt trust everything your mate from tech says.

You will need a cert, your increasing the displacement and on paper, your increasing the power too.

not to mention, its not undo a few bolts and do a few more up.. its a bit more work than that.

$1500 is expensive for a 4efte, i was pricing one up for my misses cynos, and found one for $450, engine, turbo, intercooler, gearbox, heavyduty clutch, ecu, loom, whatever other bits i wanted too (radiator etc). All bits attached

then again, he was getting annoyed that no one wanted it (origionally had it for $1200 and kept going down in price until i finally popped up, then we got the sw... so yeh).

by the sounds of it, you should do some research yourself, and not listen to your mates so much, its fine if he knows excactly what hes talking about (not saying i do, but.. yeh, ive got these chaps on here to smack me back in line if anything is incorrect).

Blacktop engines and gearboxes (especially 6 sp) are getting very very expensive, so $800 would be lucky to net you the gearbox (if your going for 6sp).

Sorted the cert? deal with that after the swap....

and again, if you change the suspension (entire unit's), you require a cert... and winding up boost will shorten the life on an UNTUNED engine, det kills an engine, maybe your thinking about rotors ;) hahaha.

but as jebus said, do some research first ^-^

Thanks HEAAAPssss

Postby Primo » Thu Aug 25, 2005 11:57 pm

Thankx Heapss

I understand the way of doin this and made my self very clear because of ur helps

1. I need cert for my Engine Swap + brack upgrad and suspension

2. It will need 4efte or 4age with Year 92-96 fxgt gerbox for under 400~600 bux

3. If im goin for 4efte it will be much less work than 4age rite?

4. I feel like 4efte is better optioni and to wind up the boost by boost controler by changin pressure on waste gate i will need better internals?

or i don need huge change???

5. if boost were nomal on 4efte it is slower than 4age if it goes in to rolla b cos of the weight

6. Thankx very much for u guyz helps I appreciate a lot and i just need to buy 4efte i guess :) any one selling one? with ger box + ecu + cooler and radiator + etc

1. Yeap, even changing engine will probbaly count as a 20% power increase

2. just dont worry about the 4age, not worth it, just go 4efte

3. Yup, Bolt in, just wiring, fuel lines, yada yada. no actual engine mounting problems (yucky)

4. nah, just dont get to silly. Ive seen vids of these engiens stock as a bone running 20+psi, and handeling it nicely. But 14odd psi would be more than good enough for plenty of fun.

5. have a look around ^_^ they are getting more and more common.

Keep an eye out for someone wrecking a GT starlet aswell...

I was told there was possibly going to be an issue of the gearbox mountings and also if there was room for it? Just get some measurements and things etc. and work it all out.

or even better look on trademe for a ep82 for cheap cheap smashed up ect then u have everything u need .

I got a ee90 w/4age and im glad i didnt do the conversion looked a mission but the only difference being drivers side mount shifted.

Certs ... my mate just got his cert done on his s1 rx7 with 13bt with upgraded brakes and it cost him around 450 it really depends how long mr engineer takes to do it .

4age is a 4age, thus why a 20v will bolt into an ae86 when it comes factory with a 16v (bar the dizzy problem)

Primo wrote:I have a quesition that wheater 20v and 16v CV is in same plac

The CV joints will always be in the same place on a fwd... on the half shafts.. between the gaerbox and the hubs lol, where else can they be?

Primo wrote:and also im putting gearbox with it so i dunno.,.

Youll need a gearbox.. or it wont go, but firstly, chosen which engine? 4efte gearbox wont fit a 4age.

Primo wrote:Another question if i get gearbox n engine out from starlet gt would gearbox will fit easily??

its gonna fit, only problem i can imagine you having is the mounts used (possibly need 2e mount from your tranny to fit 4efte, but im not completely sure).

2e box will fit the 4e, but it will be munched fairly easily if your not nice to it.

also, you know youll need new fuel lines? use the carbie original line as a return, and get new ones made up.
