disabling 4ws?

ive heard some people talking about disabling 4ws on their cars, how easy is this? someone said removing the fuse but this didnt sound very feasable

ive also heard that there is some sort of eliminator bar that attaches to the steering on the rear that stops it form moving?

does anyone know anything more about this?

On E39A VR4's you could just drill a hole and put a pin through the rear arm to disable it, shouldn't be too much different on a GT4 surely...

Disabling it has advantages, in most cases the 4WS seems to make cars handle like a dog anyway, IMO, hence why they don't still do it much I guess...

Feels like your driving a forklift... cant be good in terms of weight shifting/affecting grip yadda blah blah.

and adding to that, especially on celicas, they computers are prone to crap themselves and arnt cheap to replace.

I know in the 300ZX, other problems make the rws very very unstable - the fix is replacing the rear steering rack with a purpose made replacement bar, and changing the 4ws solenoid and reservour for the 2ws equivalents.

I would be hesitant to leave the steering rack in at the back without any system controlling it ...

Out of interest, why do you want to do this?

for those reasons mentioned above, scary shit driving thru the port hills at speed, feels like u always on the outside edge of the corner and bout 2 fall off, not to mention the tendancy to go sideways cornering at speed, front wheel drives arnt meant to drift!!!

I havent had much to do with 4ws fwd's. come to think of it, I drove a honda for a week earlier in the year with 4ws, felt pretty weird. I particularly enjoyed violently zigzaging the wheel at slower speeds- felt like the thing was going to roll...still, was a cheep trade, and a honda.

Does WOF guys look for it in particular though? I'm sure if the car is like debaged so it doesn't say 4WS and you remove the LED for the fault light so it doesn't shine no one would ask questions about it....

Have done this with ABS aswell. Remove the LED so the light don't shine when ABS was removed from an ABS car and they didn't know tit from tat.
