APEXI safc blacktop 4age question

Postby RAZA » Wed Aug 24, 2005 1:20 pm

Does anyone have any experience hooking an apexi safc 2 up to a blacktop 20v 4age?

Are there any gains to be had?
Is it an alternative to an aftermarket ecu if you are looking to turbo an n/a engine?
Does it work OK with a map sensor or does it need an afm?

Also does anyone know whether a vafc 2 can be used to control vvt in the same way it controls vtec?

Thanks.

There will be gains, but I guess don't expect it to be much. You won't really reduce your 1/4mile time by more than 1/10ths of a second. If you do, then you are lucky.

It's (SAFC) not really an alternative to an aftermarket ECU for a turbo...all this does is add or reduce fuel at a certain rpm.

As for the VAFC, I'm not really sure....but I'm guessing that the answer is No.

It should be able to change the vvt point. works with both map and afm.

Why go backwards in time, the stock setting is set with TPS and RPM, unlike Vtec which is 1 set point.

setting it so it changes at 1 point (be higher or low if say you ran at full throttle throughout entire rpm range), is taking a step backwards.

its like turning VVT-I into VVT....

Apexi SAFC2 gives you 12 points across the rpm range that you can adjust the fuel upto -50/+50%, you can set the increments as small as 200rpm. I have just bought one for my levin. I haven't installed it yet but will keep you informed on the results.

Definitely not. Be aware that it may allow you to adjust fuel, but if you are thinking about installing larger injectors and then trimming them back with an SAFC then you will most likely run into very real detonation issues as the SAFC cannot correct for the resultant shift in the ignition map that occurs when you trim fuel back in this way. This is NOT what you want to do with a NA -> turbo conversion! I would reccommend something like a Greddy E-manage as an alternative thats not really much more expensive.

We sell these and can offer a TS discount - contact me off-list if you want more info.

Errrr no - not at all. If you only own the main unit and use it as a stand alone intercept then yes, but there is no sensible reason to do so when with the addition of the ignition and injector harnesses you have a fully laptop tunable 20x20 resolution ignition AND fuel computer. FYI we are running the newer emanage ultimate in the caldina (making 214kw at the wheels on moderate boost and standard internals). The E-manage is a FAR sight above a simple fuel controller like the S-AFC.
