how do you clean off/neutralise brake fluid

Postby Mr Revhead » Wed Aug 31, 2005 12:39 pm

got a wee prob on my aw11.

the brake master cyl has leaked. because of that the paint under it is rooted. been like it for a while and the steel has started to corrode.

so what i want to know is how do i make sure that any new paint isnt going to react with the fluid and bubble up? iv heard of this being a problem.

maybe meths?

I bought this spray can stuff from Repco - under $10 for a big can from memory.
Don't tell anyone, but I bought a Corolla so I could beat some Hondas on TvH days :P

in the past ive cleaned the surface with meths/thinners, sanded, cleaned again and not had a problem of lift or reaction.

edit- often Ive also scrubbed the area with soapy water prior to the rest also.

You dont rub the area, I spray it with water from a pressure sprayer and it washes it away. Dont rub it though, thats when itll break down your paint.

When we paint cars, we always use 'prepsol' to get off any oil/grease which stops the paind sticking

I think these are all good suggestions but I'm afraid that I can't really back that up with anything authoritative. So, FWIW I'm sure I have read somewhere that soapy water is sufficient to remove brake fluid, and also that it is soluble in meths. Of course 'Prepsol' or other grease remover is always a good idea before painting.
