Gearbox Help
All,
I need some advice on Toyota Gearboxes.
As some of you know, remember, I am in the process of organising to change the gearbox in my car. Current situation. I have a ST191 Chassis. A Gen 2 3S-GTE out of a ST-185. I currently am using a Manual Gearbox out of a ST-171.
I have a replacement gear box that I got from a wrecker the other week, but I am not 100% sure if it is the correct one or not. Apparently the box is out of a 3S-GE powered ST-202. The reason I am concerned is that the drive shafts on the box are larger than the ones that are on my car currently. I came to this conclusion this weekend as I was going around Pick A Part looking for a Manual ST-202. I found an Auto ST-202, but the drive shafts appear to be the same size as to what I have in my car now.
Question is. Have I been sold the incorrect gearbox, or do I have to find some driveshaft that fit my car and replacement gearbox.
Currently the gearbox is in Whangarei, but I can bring it down next week if there is someone who is willing to have a look at it for me to check that it is the correct one.
Thanks for you help.
Neil

Just remember: The glass is neither half full nor half empty, it is merely the wrong size
There might be a different gearbox for the ST202/ST206 celicas compared with the earlier celicas etc.
I sold one that was out of a Superstrut Curren ST206 with LSD I'm sure it was an E series gearbox.
Anyone else with what their Celica or Curren has/had?

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

What is exactly involved with this swap? Do you have to cut and weld the castings back up for this to work, as I have herd it, but have no idea on what to do?

for some details as to what is needed to change to the mr2 box, read my posts in this old thread of yours:

To change the gear selector arm you probably will need to take the housing off the gearbox, rather than cutting and welding. You'll then need to block up the hole for the old one. I have a gt4 box here you can have (free) for the purposes of taking parts off it to convert the mr2 box for fwd. Also I could tell you for sure whether you have an E series or S series box.
You might need to change your clutch also, depending on the size of the gearbox input shaft (splined bit) on what's in there now compared to what you put into it.
If the driveshafts are larger you may be able to make a hybrid driveshaft by changing CV joints. I'll bet you that a GT-Four outer CV will go onto the larger shafts on the new box and fit into your hubs, problem may simply be the length of the shafts

well FWIW I just took the shifter arm out of the gt4 box. Easy as
You just have to remove the filler bung in the top of the gearbox, and unbolt the 4 bolts around the arm. I would imagine this means an MR2 one can be removed in a similar manner, although because it goes through a small hole there's a chance you may have to take the blank cover thing off the end and disassemble the mechanism somehow to remove it.

I think I might have the drive shafts sused.
I got some out of a VZV30 this weekend at P.A.P. Will go up north this weekend to check that they fit in the box. I will also check that the spline is the correct sizing for the wheel hubs as well while I am at it, I will check the lengths to see if they are the correct lengths.
Once I have done all that, the swap should hopefully be sweet (all tests going in my favor).
I do know that I will need another clutch, but I gather it should be sweet to get another, I am going to ring Race Brakes tomorrow to get that orginised. (I'll also replace the driveshaft seals and the CV boots while I am at it as well.)
Do you think that there are any other traps that I might slip into?
