Removing Half Shafts.

Postby Silent Knight » Sun Sep 18, 2005 2:34 pm

Right well I'm stuck at the moment as I don't have a puller. I've removed my diff housing etc from the Soarer and now need to get the diff head out but the half shafts won't budge...

Anyone have any ideas?

Are there any threaded holes in the flanges?

If there are then you could use a bolt through them to jack the 'half shafts' out. Check to make shure there is nothing else holding them in first.

If they are anything like the supra's (should be the same) then all you should do it impact them out....the are held in by a ring clip like cv joints normaly.
just remember when you go to refit them you may have to replace the locking ring.

Yea I've gone out and bought two crowbars and I've actually managed to bend the one the crowbar today and they still don't move... :?

Only thing left to do really now is take it to Diffs R Us. If they can just pull the shafts out wich will take all of 3 minutes with a proper puller then it'll be easy to change things over and put it all back in.

they must be really stubborn! my only other suggestion would be a slide hammer but if you don't have one then thats not much good! you could try hanging the whole unit about 6 inches from the floor by chaining the halfshaft flange to a beam and dropping the unit so it pulls the halfshaft out of the centre, but you're probably better off just paying $20 and not wrecking something by being rough.

Yea it is a complete pain in the ass really. All this hasle for something so trivial...

I've though about a chain and dropping it but I don't have a chain and the shitty garage roof would probably cave in from the weight of that if I tried... :P

AFAIK there's no circlips or anything else holding them as I can't see anything. Called Mark at Diffs this morning and he is busy all day so will take it in to him tomorrow morning first thing to get the shafts taken out. Hopefully putting them back in is not going to be as big a pain in the arse as taking them out...

The clips are actualy on the spline towards the end and locate the thing in as well as hold them, then again if you have beed doing burnouts etc there could be a problem with twisting on the spline......be interested to find out why they havnt come out as they should have.

best post pics of what they look like when you have them pulled so we can all see what was what.

The Soarer hasn't really had that sort of a thrashing though. I've only ever done 1 real burnout with at Meremere months ago.

Will see tonight as Mark has been kind enough to have a look at it for me tonight. He obviously has more diff experience to me and this is the first one I've ever tried pulling apart.

Thanks will post pics if anything interesting pops out.

With toyota ahafts you need two bars 180 degrees apart and lever evenly.
Should come out piece of piss

Or so everyone says....we've had 2 people with crowbars on both sides trying to pry them loose. All to no avail...

Will see what happens tonight, if it all fails then I'll be seeing Mike at Diffs 730 tomorrow morning.

i remembered having to do this on the sigma, was easy, jacked it up, took of wheel, took off drum housing and partially bolted it on backwards and used it as a makeshift slide hammer, ahhh the good old days, who needs disc brakes?

haha yea true.
Jason was kind enough to let me use his workshop tonight to put the diff etc back together. What a bloody mission. Took about 45mins worth of bashing to get the half shafts back in there... 8O

At least she's all ready to go now. After work tomorrow will be putting her back in and taking the bitch for a gud ol' thrashing!!! :D

Right well she's in and going again except for a wee little exhaust leak wich will be fixed once I get some sealant for the gasket...

Haven't thrashed her in the dry yet but this morning at around 630am when I pulled out of the driveway for work and roads were still a little damp I gave it just a small amount of gas and she crossed up so nice and easy!!! :D

I'm lurVVVViNg it
