So to compare differences, can anyone tell me what the original specs were for a ST205, I've tried google but can't seem to ask the question in the right way.

It's probably the other way around. The amount of revs the engine is doing doesn't accurately indicate how much fuel you are going to use. You could be in 3rd gear at 50km/h at say 3000rpm or in 4th gear at 50km/h at say 2000rpm, if you load up the motor (ie going up a hill), you are going to use more fuel in 4th doing less revs. The same works for tires, if you have a larger than standard diameter, for starters your speedo will be out, you'll have a theoretical higher top speed, but your engine will have to work harder to get the acceleration, so more fuel usage.

My car is meant to have 205/50R16 tires but I used 205/55 R16 which is about 5% out. When I put 205/50 R16s back on, it didn't feel so sluggish, and I got better overall fuel economy.

Was thinking about this thread whilst driving last night and found something interesting in the SW20.

At 3000RPM:

1st gear: 20kph
2nd gear: 40kph
3rd gear: 60kph
4th gear: 80kph
5th gear: 100kph

Goes up in 20's.

The Bluey does 2700 at 100
and the RF400RP manages 6000 at 100ish
ST162 3000ish at 100
(all manual of course)

mine is damn near dead on 3500 on a 1991 ae101 20v, with 205/40/r17 tyres at 100km/h......i sometimes wish it was lower (6 speed? ) simply to reduce cabin noise a bit.

No other ae101 people reading this thread?...

Thats a Series 2, with 1400 turbo.

The earlier 1300 were quicker :) And I have the earlier :P

As long as I can point out that your car has less HP (105 @5750) and lower top speed (196km/h) :P

BTW if this car is the right one the Final drive is 3.59 and top gear is 0.863, thus making you tacho error even more Vague-lia :D

 Vague-lia

yep, the tach is wrong, it should indicate around 3200rpm@100km/hr. Top speed is 200km/hr.

Do you guys realize if you going to compare speed of car speedometer vs tacho, the wheel size DOES NOT MATTER, it will always show say 3100 in 6th @ 100kph, no matter what wheel diameter. That is assuming speedo has not been calibrated for new wheels.

Was thinking about this thread whilst driving last night and found something interesting in the starlet.

At 80kph and full throttle:

5th gear: Brrrrrraaaa
4th gear: BRRRR!
3rd gear: BRRRAAAAAA
2nd gear: BRAAAADIDIDIAAAA
1st gear: DIDIDIDADAA*CLANK*BOOM!*

Life without a tacho is so much simpler. :)
