AE85/86 suspension ideas???

Postby rodimus » Sun Oct 02, 2005 3:07 pm

hi guys iv read in quite a few of the forums especially the drift orientated ones. that many people use short shocks for tthe front of here AE85/AE86 drift machines. what are the specific advantages of using these over normal stroke shokes for drifting. i would like to know as im in the process of doing a complete suspension overhaul in my AE85, and would like to do it right the first time.

and also on the topic of AE85/86 suspension what r u guys using??

thanks in advance.

after lowering the car with lowering spring, or good old makita 1's. the car has been lowered and need shocks to match the height of the springs to make the shock work to its best ablity.
the lower the car is the less body roll, helps heaps if you trying to drift. as my mate found out when his skyline was to high.
all depends on what money you want spend on suspension.
if your got the money coils overs are nice to have.

Alot of people recomend the AE92 ones instead of AE85/6 ones because they have a shorter stroke. i have AE92 ones in the front of mine beacause i dropped mine quite a bit in height, i have shortened trd 8 way adjustable in the front with trd 8kg front springs, rear is again trd 8 way adjustable shortened shox with 4kg trd springs, fairly stiff and bumpy
If you drink, and drift,
your a bloody lunatic

What are you gonna use the car for? And how harsh a ride can you handle?

AE85 with bluetop 4age, T series rear, ae86 brake setup all round.
-King springs (std lower approx -30mm) - A little softer than most aftermarket springs, but provide a ride that is quite survivable for daily madness. Also allows some rapid speed bump traversing with loosing all the fillings in your mouth, or getting airborne...
-KYB shocks - A little harder than a lot of common shock replacements. Makes for fast steering response.
-24mm front sway bar, 18mm rear swaybar. (Factory AE86 are 22 & 14)
-Urethane bushes all around except for a couple that were too expensive for me.
-1/2 cage
All in all, a very streetable combination.

If I had the money I would go for adjustable shocks with some good non-adjustable springs (about 30-40mm lower), bigger bars (24 & 16 would be good), strut braces (front and rear), 15 inch rims (195/50-15 ??) and urethane bushes (on at least all the important areas, talk to experts on this).
