crank seal issue

Postby wanado13's » Mon Oct 17, 2005 11:08 pm

I'm putting some bluetop cams in at the mo so I fugured while I was at it I'd put new cam seals, cambelt, and crank seal in but the timing pully that you have to take off down by the crank to change seals won't come off. Has anyone done this on their ae92 gtz and if so did they have the same issue and if so how the hell do you get it off!

just give it a even leaver all around and it should come off, always works for me. If it looks like its had water in there & some surface rust soak it in crc overnight first.

be careful, they are very brittle. I've broken too many myself. If it is completely stuck, you can try drill holes and tap thread (say M6) in use it to pull it out.

good point, Ive seen several broken ones also, so if leavering make sure its on good metal, not just the outer edge.

yea I tried levering it and I have crc'd it. Thats why I can't understand why it won'y come off. Got my mechanic mate to have a look and he works at toyota and couldn't understand why it wouldn't come off either. Tried using a harmonic puller but it won't fit in there. Any more ideas?

Some of them are just f*cken tight, had a prick of a time trying to get mine off. Ended up abusing the crap out of a SnapOn puller in the end to get it off, wasn't an easy job though

try heating it with heat gun, or flame if you have access to it...

heat

Postby fxgt race » Tue Oct 18, 2005 8:54 pm

yes heat is the answer, the best investment for getting anything things undone, blackwoods and paykels was selling a propane blow torch for $80.it is a bit tricky because u can get anything behind it but a little gentle leaving off the block with a bar and a lot off heat should get it,watch the plastic.

yeh... heat is the answer really. its quite a common problem really.. sumtimes they are easy, just slide off. other times they r difficult. i did a rebuild on an rb20det last week and i had to get the biach glowing red hot and have 2 big crobars in behind the pulley with 2 big guys pulling with all their weight on them and finally it slid of with much blood/sweat lost from all partys involved. by far the hardest iv ever had to take off. ur best bet is to use 2 small levers of some kind and try take it off evenly.

pulley

Postby JasonZE » Thu Oct 20, 2005 6:27 pm

If the seal isnt leaking just leave it!

If you want to get it off I agree with sergi I have done many and not just toyota's you are best to drill 2 holes tap them to 6mm and use a harmonic balancer puller or similar heating is an option but last resort in my view

well... my crank seal wasn't leaking to bad but the cam seals were so there was alot of oil down the side of my engine and because I thought that I'd be changing it I used brake kleen and degreaser down there and apparently that screws the seals so it kinda has to be done now..... yea I'll give that idea a go before I wip out the heat idea as it seems a little last resort.
