20v Timing

Postby phat_levin » Sat Nov 05, 2005 3:24 pm

did a search and have been browsing for about an hour now but didnt find much on what advancing the timing on my 20v would do for its performance? it is going to run a bit better with it advanced? how far can you safely advance it? thanks!

Toyota tuned my black top to 15 degrees. Asked a engine tuner to check out the timing, fuel air mixture and dyno it a few weeks later.
He said its all running pefectly so didnt want to change it. Felt like it had slightly more power before the Toyota mechanics tuned it.

some engines may tolerate more than others with carbon buildup an all, I ran my silvertop an blacktop on 10 using gull 96 and havent had a problem if you look at the front edges on the dizzy and the top edge of the head you can line them up and thats 10deg no timming light needed :D

I think you'll find that at 15 degrees the ECU wound back the knock correction map so that its operating just before (or on) detonation. Max engine power is a few degrees before detonation so RevHeads suggestion should yield better results.
The answer is Helmholtz!
