Different interior panel paints

Postby soven » Wed Nov 09, 2005 11:52 pm

Just kind of curious as to the different kinds of paints available.

I successfully painted my panels before using the small duplicolor cans ($12 each) and normal primer and clearcoat. These lasted without any signs of cracking etc.

Just recently, I thought of respraying everything back to matt black . Considering the high temperature duplicolor paint is the same price and theres no harm trying since I could use it for my calipers , I bought that and the duplicolor adhesion promoter.

Test sprayed on some smaller panels. After a day of drying, it seemed that the paint was ok to be handled but still scratches off easily. Why is that? Would a clearcoat solve that problem? I used clearcoat the last time.

should really use plastic prime first to etch in better.

if you clear coat it, it wont be matt black anymore will it...

hmm plastic primer, I thought the Duplicolor Adhesion promoter is a primer by itself?

in answer to your question about the paint scratching off... how many coats did you do when you test painted?, did you prime it and wait for that to dry before you did you top coat??? normally paint takes a few days (48 hours) to completley harden.

and if you use clear coat on a matt finish it will end up gloss.

i have just Painted the stereo surround my corolla.
i used a bodytech plastic primer/filler to remove the texture (10 coats) progressivly sand it back to 600 ( 120, 200, 400, 600) two more coats of primer ( sand from 400 --> 1200)

then i did 4 coats of vht quick dry paint. came up like a dream. make sure you prep the plastic very well as any imperfections annoy you (it took me one day to prime and 1 day to do top coat) ill post pics up in an hour (of prepping)

here is what it looked like after 10 coats of plastic primer filler and an hour of sanding. stupid me forgot to fill the hole in before i painted it so i did it then. probably not the best idea but it worked :)

Before this , I painted my interior Silver with clearcoat. IT worked out fine and it did not scratch easily.

This time around, I am painting it back to matt black.

I have gone ahead and done it , 400grit ->600grit -> 3 coats Duplicolor Adhesion promoter(primer) -> 3-4coats VHT Enamel interior/exterior paint.

I have left it overnight(12hours~) and it seems that the paint scratches off easily. I do not remember it being that easy last time. Was it the clearcoat that helped? This time around I am going for Matt Black therefore a clearcoat is out of the question..

Should I spray more layers today and let it dry again?

Maybe I am just too impatient and I should let it dry another day... ?

It was a dull grey originally.

I will just let it dry and see what happens after a few days I guess.

do give it adequate dry time, otherwise it will be easier to scratch off.
When you say it scratches off, do you mean the whole coat of paint or just that it marks easier?- a lot of matt black paint does leave marks easy.

did you shake the paint can enough before using it?

Personaly I would go for black bumper dye with aplicator sponge. Dont need primer and does not scratch.
