Funny noise on Idle

Postby ollieboy » Sun Nov 13, 2005 2:10 am

Hi

I have a 95 Trueno FZ and it started making a strange sound on idle. It sounds like its running real rough and sometimes the engine shakes a bit. A couple of people have looked at it and said noisy tappets. If this is the problem how would I fix it.

Would one of those engine flush things work?

I have searched but all I could find was about 20V's and I don't have a 20V but was wondering if the same thing could happen to my car, that VVT thing.(Because I don't think my car has VVT)

cheers

does the strange noise sound like diesel engine? is it during cold start or always there?
Cheers...

Sounds like an engine flush to me, we have a few 20v (Iknow yours isn't) in every now and again cause of the noisey tappets and thats all it takes.
Shouldn't cause the shaking though unless its only slight

Yes, it sounds like a diesel and it is always there whether its cold or not.

The shaking is only a little bit, it could even be normal engine shaking for all I know it was just shaking in time with the tapping so I thought it could be related.

I will try the engine flush then and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your help guys

just out of curiousity.....how much does it shake, like the whole car.
(reason i say this is i remember ages ago when i first had my car, the leads were very frail for some reason, and i managed to snap one, dont ask how, therefore, only firing on 3 cylinders)

also is it constant or sort get slowly worse and then frees up and then worse like in a constant circle???

is it only on startup, like the first 10 - 15 mins?
I had vtax :(

Sometimes the whole engine shakes quite alot, sometimes only a little. The whole car doesn't shake.

I haven't noticed it go in a cycle it sort of just starts when the car starts and stays like that for the whole time and when I start the car next time the sound will be different. It is the same with the shaking, sometimes it will only be a little bit and then when I start it the next time it will be quite alot.

I will go check there is current running through the leads after lunch.

Thanks

it would shake quite a lot if one of the leads had snapped. like the whole car would rock.

my car has a very rough idle when starting it in the morning, ive been told its various things, one was that it needs a new cold start injector and thermal time switch. as i only have this problem on start up, once its been running for say 15 mins its fine.

Is this the same with yours cos this could be the problem.

Nah, it shakes all the time, it might just be normal engine movement combined with the tappets that makes it do it.

Thanks for your help AJz, I will try the engine flush and if it doesnt work will let you know and will have a look at one of the other things you suggest.

Cheers

Is it loosing power? The best additive on the market for noisy lifters is (MBL8). Run a flush change oil/Filter and use this additive.

Weve found 90% of the time it does the trick, works very well on Mitsi Lancers and EJ20 Subies.

Ok, I did the engine flush and I checked the engine mounts(actually I got a friend to do it cause I don't know anything about it) and it still makes the ticking sound. I was now wondering maybe it is the fuel I am putting in it. The old owner put 91 in it and so I just put 91 in it but is there a chance that may be the problem? should it be on 95 or 98?

Cheers

you could try if you want, most of us on run either 96 or 98.

try and empty the tank as much of 91 as poss before you fill up, doesnt mean run it dry tho, lol

I tried putting 98 in it but it still did the thing so I put some new oil in with detergent stuff in it that a mechanic said to try, he gave it to me for free cause hes getting pissed off with me hanging round trying to fix the problem.

If this doesn't work I am going to change the spark plugs cos I feel these could be the problem.

By chance the ticking noise you described itsnt dirty injectors??, cause they get quite loud when they need cleaning.
Put your finger on one and see if the pulse corresponds to the noise you are hearing.
