ae82 20v Conversion - Problems

Postby XS1V » Thu Dec 01, 2005 5:30 pm

Hey all i just started the 20v in my ae82 fxgt for the first time :D

Problem is though, it wont keep running  it starts then dies, it just wont idle. It will keep running though if you give it continuous bursts of throttle, but not constant throttle or it dies also. The problem im guessing has to be electrical as i havnt touched anything to do with the engine since removing it from my ae101 levin where it was running sweet.

Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks in advance :)

lack of fuel pressure.

There was a thread that had this exact problem quite a while ago.

There's an earth wire on the AFM plug that needs to be connected to....... an earth!! White with a black trace. Had the same problem with the transplant into the AW.

Put a jumper wire from the FP to the B+ in the diagnostic plug.
This bypasses the fuel pump relay. If you engine runs normally then you will have to sort out a wire from the AFM switch to the fuel pump relay.

In MAP sensored motors the computer controls the fuel pump relay after you let go of the starter key. In 20v silvertops the pumps is controlled by a switch in the AFM which closes when you have air flowing through it keeping the flap open. In both cases MAP and AFM the fuel pump will stop when the engine stops so there will be less fuel spraying around if you have an accident.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

try idle bypass valve, when i did my conversion, i had similar problems, you need to find the tube coming off the idle bypass valve (perhaps some nice toyspeeder can show one on a silvertop photo) and plug the pipe up, see if this helps.

Sorry - can't remember where the wire pops out - could be on a grey plug somewhere near the diagnostic plug area as thats where I've connected mine. Use a meter to trace it. I've pulled out all the stuff I don't need out of my loom so don't have the extra plugs etc.

To test if its the AFM earth, turn the key on then hold open the AFM flap. The fuel pump should run all the time until you close the flap. To see if it only runs while cranking, pull the solenoid wire off the started motor and then turn the key to the start position - just so you can hear whats happening with the fuel pump. Again the fuel pump should run until you let the key go. Normally, the AFM side of things takes over once the flap is open from air flow into the motor.

Hope this helps.
See ya

Ok so ive traced it pretty much top the AFM i think.... it will run if you hold the flap open a little with your hand, so what could that be?

All three earths are definately going to appropriate earthing points. The three yellow wires to ecu give both 12v and ground on the multimeter though, dont know if they are supposed to do that or not :?

Any more ideas?? Everyones help is appreciated :)

When the engine is running the airflow should hold the flap open.
If it does not then the must be an airleak between the AFM and the throttlebody?

BOV possibly?
