Oily problem with blk top 20v

Postby ROBODISCO_20v » Sun Oct 16, 2005 12:38 pm

I have a oily problem with my black top 20 valve in my ae111. Every now and then mainly after i've been driving around town at 50kph i can smell oil burning & ocasionally white smoke will come out the exhaust while i'm idling. I thought it might be oil from the rocker cover breather pipe going into the intake, so i riped it all off but it was as dry as a bone in there. The only other thing i can think of is i've blown my head gasket or something so oil is getting into the cylinder directly from a gallery? I did have a problem with the car running lean at low revs & this may have caused some damage. I have also noticed a decrease in power.
Anyone else had a similar problem or have any ideas ?

You guys have just got the typical blacktop symptoms:

Drinking Oil
White Smoke From a hot exhaust
Oil burning smell
etc

I've had the same thing in mine several times, and had the car checked over plenty of times for the problems. There never seems to be a real problem at all so I just leave it. The guys at Toyota just said that they were just typical problems that all blacktops and some silvertops have. :(

Or maybe mine's about to blow up! 8O

:D

I'm going to get a comp test done, I'm pretty sure it's the head gasket

If your looking at replacing the valve seals get a "valve grind" gaskit set, as it dosnt cost much more than $200 odd for just valve stem seals, and inc new head gaskit an so-on

My black top started blowing a lot of smoke at high reves after I did an oil change. The oil level was high but not at the top of the level gauge. I drained about 250ml of oil out and it hasnt blown any smoke since and hasnt used a drop of oil either, done about 3200ks so far then. Car has done 82,000 ks.

It was a Permaseal kit, brought through a Toyota dealership... they did all the work. I wouldn't trust myself pulling apart the entire engine, I’d probably break something!

Turns out it was the rings. I had a email from a guy in ozzy & he had the same problem with his black top. I stuck some ACL chrome race series rings back in it. They are cheaper & better than genuine ones. So its win, win. Used a genuine gasket set & TRD 0.8mm head gasket. Also replaced the bearings with ACL race series ones while we where in there.

I experience all the same symptoms (but not quite as bad).

I had it in at Toyota, the mechanic said the cause was a "20v Blacktop Engine". It very common for the valve seals to harden and let oil through.

Yeah like I said it was the rings. Dont you read the posts :?:
The oil rings were so worn that they flopped about in the bore. Well not flop but you get what i mean, they didn't have a good seal & there was a gap. Lucky they didn't cause any damage to the cylinder walls & all it needed was a light hone before we put the pistons back in with new rings.

you said it was white smoke
if it was then your car is the only one ive ever seen heard of that has made white smoke out the exhaust with bad rings......

white smoke out the breather can happen though from the scorching effect of the flame traving past the rings and down the bores
