Which Engine Management System for ST 185 celcia gt4?

Postby GT4PWA » Mon Jan 30, 2006 9:11 pm

After reseach on the net, what engine management system woudl you reccomend for a ST185 gt4.

Everyone on the net claims their product is best so im wanting some advice from someone who has been there and done that on these cars.

Im willing to spend up to 5k on the management system as i know it will be money well spend for when the new engine arrives. I also want to know there are places that know how to install and tune these things properly

Its purpose is a quick street car that drives well but can handel the pressure or meri meri or pukekoe.

I hear link is the common system but are they suitable for my car and want im wanting from my car? keeping in mind im looking for around 500hp at the wheels?

enough so that im not blowing the engine and it is somewhat reliable. If possible id try to be able to control that HP from teh cabin so that 500hp only b used at meri meri or on the dyno. for day to day driving have it sitting at around 300-350.

if you have 5K then get a Motec M800.
If you want to spend a bit less get something along the lines of an Autronic SMC2 or a Haltech E11.

500hp @ wheels is a seriously massive number. You're going to need around 600hp @ the engine to reach that - which on a 3sgte is getting into very expensive territory.

The hydra nemesis seems to be a pretty good option - many of the extra features you'd use from a motec but a lot cheaper.

I wired a linkplus into an ST185 a while ago,
it runs aftermarket rods pistons etc but with std head and cams.

I run it on a Linkplus and they are more than happy with the results at around 200kw atw on road fuel (96)

But that is nowhere near what you are wanting to go and get.

If you have enough cash to get that reliable power out of an ST185,
then you have the cash (as stated) to go motec.

With those mild mods get a Link or something.
Or if you do want to spend $5k, then Motec.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

I would suggest going to talk to John Butler at Tuning and Performance. He will give you a good honest answer.

Address:
8 King St
Hamilton

Phone number: 0-7-846 6546

A friend of mine recomends a Motec M800 or Autronic SMC2. Having worked on Rod Millens hill climb celica and many other high powered 3sgte engines i would say he will be on the money.

Agreed with ganjasaur. Either go for the motec, or an autronic. Both are very very capable units. If you're serious about wanting 500hp+ I wouldn't try cutting corners on the ECU.

And make sure you get the right person tuning it!
