Info needed on removing engine from AE92 Levin...

Postby Stealer Of Souls » Mon Feb 13, 2006 8:37 am

Okay.
So. Followed the instructions in the book and managed to disconnect/remove everything I need to get the engine out except for the drive shafts...

I tried following the book, but can't make heads or tail of what I'm looking at.

AE92 Levin, manual. What's the best way of disconnecting the drive shafts from the gearbox? My haynes manual indicated that I would only need to take the gearbox end out... but I could be reading it wrong as it's not 100% clear to me... Should I just take the driveshafts out of the hubs first and then pull pull the shafts from the box? Or can I get the shafts out of the box without removing the whole thing?
Help me!

Yes.

I've always found it easier to drop the whole subframe, but if it fits out the top good on ya

You can get the shafts out of the box while they are still in the hubs but its a bit of a pain. I would take them out of the hubs first and then pull them out.

remove the axles from both the hub and box, hub end is usually done first.

the motor will fit out the top easy enough, depends if you are using a lifting winch or a lowering forklift. if the body is remaining in place while the engine is out, then probably easier to lower the motor onto a trolley/barrow, than to swing it clear of bodyshell if lifting.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

I thought as much...
Well then... Off home tonight to start removing driveshafts... Then the mission of lifting the engine... Starting to wish I could lift the car... but alas, given the situation... I can't....

Thanks again all.

You can actually remove the engine without removing the gearbox, just remove all the accessories (waterpump etc) remove the crank pulley. Then support the engine, completly remove the cambelt side engine mount, unbolt the engine from gearbox and slide the engine out.

It's tight but does work, I've got an engine both out and in again by this method on my ae92.

Was going to try this. But now I need to get to the gearbox mounts for someone so out comes the whole thing...

If you want parts, I've got lots and they're cheap. Make an offer on what you need...

me and my mate got the front sub frame out after work one night when we wrecked an fxgt ae92, got all the loom out of the way, extra pipes and cables(eg. clutch, map senor, throttle body, fuel, radiator, etc) used the engine hoist got the front of the car about 1.4m off the ground at the front. put axle stands under the car bout where the doors are hinged. cut of the steerings arms got lazy. put the engine hoist on to the engine hooks just under tention. got under the car unbolt the whole sub frame then let it down slowly on the ground making sure everything was unattached to the motor & box. then we got a long chan around the front of the car and wheel it back bout metre and half out the the way of the sub frame. then picked up the whole sub frame put inside to strip it. took about 4hour i think

That's how the book says to do but I don't have some of the luxuries to make this option much easier than lifting the engine out.

I have't got it out yet. If I still haven't done it by friday I might take you up on your offer. I'm so close now though. As long as the weather holds I should be okay. I've just gotta remove the drive shafts, then unbolt the mounts and out she pops. So shouldn't take more than an hour or two (considering I've never removed driveshafts or anything like this before).
