My FX is squeaky

Postby FXGTV » Sun Mar 05, 2006 3:24 pm

Started my my car this morning and heard a dreadful sqeaking sound comming from the engine bay :? Sounds like its comming from the cam belt or power-steering/alternator belt.

The noise continues when driving, but its less pronounced whilst accelerating.
Any ideas on what may be causing this? The cam belt was replaced 10,xxx ks ago, so i doubt its that, but i have had a problem with the power steering belt before (an old lead id left hanging dropped down and flicked the belt right off).

I def think its the a/c belt. When i turn on the a/c the noise gets louder, so it stands to reason its that belt. Hopefully that doesnt mean its anything too serious....

I assume your talking about the car in your profile? ae92? always good to state what car your talking about

Anyway if its the AC then no worries, just the AC and PS suffer, nothing serious  the tensioner is in between the AC and crank pully 8)

open bonnet with engine running

carefully pour water on various belts (takes careful aiming)

when the noise changes markedly, that's the belt that is slipping.

Now you just have to find out if it is slipping because it is worn / loose or because your power steering or air con pump is trying to seize ;)

Haha sorry, yeah its my ae92. I poured water onthe belts and sure enough it got ummm ,squeakier when the water hit the p/s belt. I would tighten it myself, but alas, no tools. I've been getting some strange looks from pedestrians as i cruise the streets sqeaking like a mofo

If you can't tighten it ($&#$% simple job) you could rub a candle on the belt (just hold it against one part of the belt with the engine running) and it may help.

But you should just get a couple of spanners and fix it.

Update: I've worked out it only starts squeaking when it rains/has been raining, and a short term solution to the problem was to use candle wax (thanks Chickenman) but this only stops the noise for a few minutes.

No biggie though, car is going in for an oil and grease next week so ill hopefully get it sorted out then :)

You mean it's going in for an oil - I doubt there's anything at all to grease!!
