It should say on the Vin plate on the firewall what kind of gearbox it is.

Otherwise gearboxes normally have a build plate on the side of them that says what type they are.

If its a jap import it will have the box code on the firewall, but since its a '84 I would say its NZ new, which gives you a string of numbers and letters meaningless to us mortals.

AE 80's are FWD right, if so I would say you have a c50

ok, thats a good start.

must be one of these, and c50 is looking likely... but still not sure.

Then its a c50, IIRC the c52/c56's have a bulge on both sides.

This has been much confusion for me also. I can get the gear ratios for lots of gearboxes, but can't get anything that matches up the gearbox type, i.e C52 to the number stamped on the gearbox i.e 6325865. So without an adequate build plate there is no way of reading what the gearbox is. NZ new cars seem to have the gearbox type 'thames' F@#$!!!

Has anyone got documentation on how this system works?

Some do... some dont. Have yet to find what causes there to be one on both sides....

if punter is correct, i would say an older car, like an 84, would have a c50. from that you could probably work out what gearbox a particular model would be most likely to have, but this method is by no means accurate.

I think Punter is incorrect also. I have a gearbox which the build plate said was a C52, and it only has one starter motor 'bulge' on the front.

AFAIK if you don't have an accurate build plate to match the gearbox, your stuffed.

take the gearbox out and count the output shafts revolutions campared to the input shafts revs

I can get the gear ratios for lots of gearboxes

match it up, and u'll be away, bugger of a way to do it, but if you need to know. *shrug*

Yep... if you know the final drive/ratios etc. that is the only accurate way that I know of.
