Alright this is just my two cents on the matter.

Look at 95% of creatures in the natural environment.... The males are always fighting to impress the females, who are always picky in choosing a mate....
Because the quality of their partner will be reflected in their offspring, and they want the best possible qualities.
Hence a natural 'pickiness' from females.
Because this gives their offspring the best chance of survival.

The males are always trying to distribute their genetics as much as possible, to give the best chance of having some offspring of theirs surviving.

The same idea pretty much applies to humans, although they're a bit more complex. Especially when you bring contraception etc. into the picture.

But as much as society progresses, we still have those base animal instincts, which have allowed us to survive for millions of years, and they arent going away any time soon.

So yes, it is a double standard, and it always will be.
It's just the natural order of things.
Women are meant to be picky... men are meant to be horndogs.

It's not a perfect system, but it's worked for the past.... however many million years.
