Which V6?

Just wondering what 'lightweight' N/A fuel injected V6 is fairly readily available here. Mulling over a project idea which may involve using a V6 in a FWD configuration. Would ideally be compact, reliable, readily tunable and uses an ally block to keep weight down.
Suggestions appreciated. :D

I'm going to have a play with a 6a10. Probably not the best v6 for a street conversion... however for a restricted cc class.... its going to be interesting. The big brother 6a12 is a good alloy engine... still not a good manufacturer though.

by the name it sounds like mitsi engines (I guess 1.8 )

Yes, Mitsubishi.

6A10 is 1600cc - one of the smallest production V6 engines - 140hp and some torque to boot.

6A12 is 2000cc, often used in the E84A twin turbo VR-4 Galant, or in the FTO in MIVEC form pushing 200hp.

6A11 is 1800cc, only comes out in SOHC format - not the best to modify.

if you're looking at Toyota, there's the 1MZ-FE, 3L alloy block, ~200hp. Kinda hard to get and expensive though. There's also the VZ series which are cheap and readily available, but iron block

I too would like to know what some good v6s are around the 3L mark that can make good power, hope we're not both thinking about the same thing :P

I'm not sure of the engine model, but my ex's (NZ new) MX6 has a 2.5 litre NA V6, and I was always quite impressed with it. Might be worth looking into :) (The JDM MX6 only has a 2 litre, nowhere near as grunty as the NZ New model). They're fwd too ;)

same motor as the NZ new telstar V6, manu facturer starts with 'M', leave it where you find it :wink:


what about using the late Nissan V#30 motor? they are alloy block.

There is the NZ spec KL-03 2.5l 165hp and then the JDM KL-ZE 2.5l 190ish hp.... for the record the JDM 2l ain't that much less than the NZ spec 2.5 powerwise :wink:

Back on topic, what about the Mitsi Diamante 3.5l mivec 206kw, or the 3.0l mivec 180kw or the FTO's 150kw 2.0l mivec?

Just a note, "think" the first mentioned mitzi 6a motors are not alloy. They also have stupid rockers, so maybe not a good choice for a high reving na??? The nissan vq20 and vq30 are alloy, a good looking motor but are a chain drive motor and " do" wear out chains, also quite wide. For compactness the best bet is the ford/mazda 2.0/2.5 v6 from the 626/telstar. They can get some huge numbers from them with alot of work, the downside is they have an open deck block (may not be an issue for na)

All the 6a series are alloy. Well they are according to CAPS and web searches, which still doesnt say much. I could imagine the 6a11 and SOHC 6a12 to have rockers. But I doubt the 6a10 or the DOCH 6a12, 6a13 have. CAPS exploded diagram doesnt show rockers either. I'm yet to recieve my 6a10, but I'll inform you about the rockers by the end of this coming week.

I'm not a great fan of mitsi, however a V6 1600?? WOW!

Hmmm, some very interesting input. I'm suprised that no one has menttioned any of the Honda motors.

Pretty sure they have a hyd lifter/ rocker setup like the 4g63 system. Could be wrong though?
Talking hondas, I done a head job on a honda north/south fwd v6 the otherday. Think it was a 3.2. Was built good but its massive/very wide.
