It isnt legal, but 9/10 times it flys under the radar when it comes to Wof time...

What I saw was a single cut edge bent outwards. That is *NOT* safe. No way, no how.

I've often wondered about the legality of the window vans(like smiths auto glass), and the things that they use to carry glass, I mean it is a big protruding chunk of metal, with no way to deflect people from it(a curved guard could be installed from under the van from a quick inspection of them)

ok, so I pretty much agree, that cutting the guards out and having them in the way you state is bloody stupid, but there is one thing that I keep on seeing on the forums when some bitches about a car.

The car was so low there was no way it was legal, but that's not it.

Now, unless you know the car, explain how you can make a gudgement like this toward any car, just because its low......... How can you possibly know if it has a cert or not. If it has a cert, and is 20mm of the ground, then its legal...... everyone seems to just assume that this car or that car is done totally illegal just because its low, and not as pretty as your damn Ae101 corolla......
a cert is only $350, and worth it.

I bring this up, because a few poeple I know have low cars, they look low, and all. But behold, they have a cert, yet when driving along you can see the look on peoples faces, like "how the hell can he drive that round without getting a pinky". One mate got pulled over by cops and one of them, who happened to be off duty at the time, was looking at the car, yelling at the guy telling him it needs a pinky, its too low. Its illegal. And its got a god damn cert plate on the firewall for all the mods.......

Its this ignorance that pisses me off the most. Most people seem to assume the worst.

There is actually specific guidance on how these must be designed in order to minimise risk to pedestrians in the WoF manual. I suppose glass has to be carried somehow and you just minimise the risks as much as you can.

yeah, they used to do it on trailers, and trucks with a double sided carry thing in the middle, but then moved to vans, I guess they are more practical around town etc.

Well, I make that statement because the guards had been cut away to clear the tyres. Now no-one would certify cutting the guards, therefore the tyres would have rubbed when it was lowered. The *complete* car is certified, therefore it is unlikely anyone would certify it with rubbing tyres, or cut guards. Therefore the car is likely to have been lowered since it was certified. Cars are certified at a specific height of course. That is why I made the statement that it looked illegal. Follow the logic?

Obviously I didn't get out with my ruler and check his certification papers! I'm not debating that.

It's not ignorance, it is realism! We have all got a bad name out there becuase of dickheads like this.

And what makes you think I have an AE101?!
