Which Valves

Postby CAMB01 » Tue Apr 18, 2006 7:24 pm

What would be a suitable option for going to larger valves on my 4AGE cylinder head.
What valves i could use?

Cheers

If you supplied a bit more information it would help..

At the very least stating which generation 4AGE you are talking about would help, and what sort of budget you have, and are you talking about building a boosted beast? high reving NA screamer?

A boosted motor will have to deal with more heat, but at lower RPM than an NA screamer, so valve weight isn't such a big issue.. but if you want a 5 digit rev limit then valve weight is going to become an issue.

And you realise that you will need to machine the head, possibly get new valve seat inserts & guides made/fitted etc? this could be more expensive than you think.

Contact an engine builder for a rough price for that sort of work might be a good idea.

and if you can provide measurements for the valves you currently have that would help.. valve diameter, stem diameter and length for intake and exhaust valves would make it a lot easier for people to help you.

Well im a motor machinist so machining isnt a problem.

Its for my 4AGTE im currently building. Running a smallport 4age head.
Will have custom made cams for it so was looking at increasing the amount of air and gas in and out of the engine.

Currently the valves i have a standard ones.
Inlet:
6mm stem diameter
100.5mm stem length
30.5mm head diameter

Exhaust:
6mm stem diameter
100.5mm stem length
25.5mm head diameter

Was looking at using valves from a 3sge but the stems are too long and the keeper grooves arent in the right place.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Im an automotive machinest as well and coming up to this stage in my build. I looked at aftermarket valves but i think beause of there size you would have to fit new inserts being 2.5mm bigger in the head of the valve.
Im going to look at shortening and machining some 3sge stainless valves but otherwise i can't see many other options.

could try 7MGTE valves

supposedly they are the same as TRD big valve kits for 4ages

they are about 2mm to short, but could use thick shims

Was looking at maybe 3SFE valves might work, aparently the keeper grooves are at the same height as 4AGE valves, but the stems are 1.5mm longer, thinking could just grind that off the stem if there is enough metal above the keeper groove. Dont want the springs breaking off the end of the stem cause i took too much off.

Was talking to my cam grinder today about the specs on my cams and he suggested using 3SGE buckets with under the bucket shims.
I was under the impression 3SGE buckets were larger and hav the shims on top?

Can anybody help me with this?
I have used these cams before and had heriffic tappet noise cause of the shims rocking on the buckets from the high lift.

hmmmm might have to ring my cam grinder about that, he was saying they went straight in.
I guessed they would be bigger cause the earlier ones are.

What other buckets with the shims underneath would fit into a 4AGE 16v head.

Cheers

Apparently the 1sz-fe buckets work wonders.

The trouble is working out your clearances.

grind the tips of the valves or reface them, cut the seats to set the clearances if using a one piece bucket

Are there any other under bucket shim setups that would work?
I like the idea of having shims as i find it to be alot easier to get the clearances accurate.
