hey guys
well after replacing the head gasket on my mr2, its using about a litre per 1000 kms or more... this arvo after the car sat for about 10 hours after a decent boost it was smoking like a 88 galant that had done 400,000kms... the smoking died out in a few minutes

i had the head sent to a head specialist when i replaced the hg, and i asked them to have the head checked and replace all the valve seals(tgp parts ofcourse thanks revhead) they sent it back having done al that and saying that the head was planed and mint...

at the beginning i thought it was the rings making the car burn soo much oil, but now im having second thoughts....

any thoughts, suggestions...? i mean on a cold start the engine shouldnt burn so much oil straight away

as usual. any help very appreciated

Why was the head removed for in the first place? Overheating I presume?

yeah overheating quite badly, pretty much to the degree of the engine not starting untill it had cooled

If a car come into work badly overheated, I would give them the option of a 2nd hand motor because there would be a good chance after doing a head job it would smoke. If they take the option of doing the head, we tell them its totally at their own risk. overheating can damage and scuff the rings.

thanks, but how about this

why is it that at cold startup the thing smokes like hell for a minute or so... see in my head(the one on my sholders above my neck) oil is a liquid often controlled by gravity when it sits... when you switch an engine off, all the oil in the engine stops being "cycled"... now if it was the rings that were the problem, how would the oil travel UP into the chambers(so that when i start up next it smokes instantly)? and if it could do this... wouldnt a more obvious explination be that one of the valve seals arnt sealing properly? and when the engine isnt running it leaks into the chambers?

im not a mechanic, but it doesnt make sense to me how the oil works its way up the cylinder bore the SECOND the engine starts???

i dunno any help apreciated, thanks for your input

Well you get oil pressure the instant you turn the engine over.
Oil is needed to lubricate the bores for the rings otherwise they would wear out too fast. The rings are probably had it and cant control the oil anymore, so its getting into the combustion chamber.

Thats my theory, please correct me if i am wrong
