Need some specific advice on track setup AE101

Postby 4000GT » Tue Apr 25, 2006 7:34 pm

Hey guys,

Firstly hello! Its nice to have a forum dedicated to Toyota in NZ.

I picked up a junker Levin AE101 with a silver top. I have a 6 speed gearbox with LSD going in and some wheels which I will get DOT tyres for. I also have a 3 puck brass button clutch disk going in. Other than that, and a rediculous carbon T spoiler and fibreglass bumper, the car is stock. Its going to be a club car then probably a fully caged race car. Can anyone direct me to upgraded supension and brake parts for the AE101, and give any track experience with them. I have modded cars before, but not a FWD Toyota so the parts from other models and aftermarket suppliers are new to me... I dont have a huge budget, so innovation is appreciated!

TIA

Andrew

First off good choice of car. Corollas are the shit

TRD do a set of rally springs. They retain standard ride height but are stiffer, especially the rear. These can be got from a genuine toyota yard for around $100 per corner. I have only raced on standard and whiteline springs. Standard where far too soft, the body roll made the car hard to control. The whiteline I have are ok, they are too soft at the rear and it feels like the front oversteers to easily. I am upgrading to TRD, heard very good things about them. Im getting the sports springs which is stiffer but also lower.

Next step I would take are adjustable shocks all round. Stiffer shocks will allow you to shift the weight quicker. Im sure other people on here know a lot more about me than suspension tuning so ill wait for there input.

You should have no problem getting the car under 1000kg. The sound detoning stuck to the floor weighs about 15kg. Its tedious and boring to remove but worth it IMO.

Power shouldnt be too much of an issue unless its circuit. If its rally hill climb/auto cross just stick with the basic bolt on exhaust and filter. 2 1/4 is a popular 4age exhaust size. If you need the power it will be an expensive job extracting it (other than the bolt on's). You will need big cams and a new computer to run them, along with all the supporting mods (ignition, bigger fuel supply, head work, etc)

Good luck with it.

thats not true.

All superstrut ae101s ae111s have the 2 pot calipers & bigger dics, if its not superstrut it just has the singlepot.
And they wont fit onto a non superstrut car unless you made an adapter plate for the caliper.

I actually dont like the car, but at least that way it doesnt matter if I crash or damage it :P

Its a track car, not hill climb etc. At least not at the moment. Do you happen to know a good supplier of TRD springs? Dealers tend to be more expensive in my expereince for the same parts. What adjustable shocks fit in the stock strut? What about camber plate uppliers?

Thanks

Can you please PM me a price for the whiteline bar (is it adjustable?), and TRD coilovers (are these camber adjustable models?)

Cheers!

Ok, seem to have enough movement, but I am kinda over not buying high quality parts for my cars, especially suspension on a track car.

these are very good quality and well made, I have pulled them apart to inspect them as well, i wouldnt use crap on my car, especailly when its 400hp. I will also be doing some track racing with mine.
They have a proper ball swival mount in them.
also when u put more camber on it puts on more caster at the same time as when u mount them onto the car they are offset slightly.

I would get longer ball joints to correct the geometry...

How do you know they are very good quality? What grade hardware was ued? What grade alloy? How were they machined? To what tolerances? What grade bearing? etc?
