Shell "fuel economy formula"

Postby Wildcard » Thu May 04, 2006 10:34 am

Say...what?

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/SC0605/S00003.htm

Lots of spin... does anyone have some numbers to demonstrate that this special new formula makes more than say a 0.01% difference?

Sounds like they saved fuel by being efficent, not by any sort of 'fuel efficency formula.' Shell is probably pouring snake oil into people's tanks and watching the sales rise.

I fail to actually see any hard facts, or evidence in this article on HOW the fuel is more efficient??

Well, here's the thing as I understand it.
If you're car is tuned for 91, and you put 92 in there, the ECU's not retarding the timing as much on hot days, so you're getting more power which does mean increased efficiency.

An efficient car is one running the proper tune.

So, in conclusion from that theory, Shell have found an african tribe who piss octane booster. For a few bags of flour a year, and plenty of water, they've found their "efficient fuel"

I gotta fill up soon. Might as well give it a go and see for myself.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

sigh.

It is all from the same tanks out of marsden point, they then add in at that stage their own brand of detergents and stuff as it goes into the tanker. Or at least that is what I have always been told.

So, in conclusion, the ads are, as usual, as always

me personally I dont like shell at all...

when I was living in Aus it came out that the only companies that werent putting damaging amounts of sulphur in their petrol was BP and mobil, but even then that was only in their Synergy 8000 and BP Ultimate.

shell on the other hand had so much sulphur in their premium fuel that i saw ppls cars get messed up by it.

Geezh some of those suggestions are common dog $&#$% sense.

'11. Avoid excess idling - Idling gets you nowhere but still burns fuel. Turn the engine off when you’re in a queue, or waiting for someone, until you need it.'
Great, so now we are going to have people turning their car off at the lights so when they go green one person gets through, Do'h, doesn't turning your car over take quite a bit of petrol as compared to just idling for 50secs

I've started using Mobil 91 in the Familia and it seems a bit more economical... not that i've done any scientific tests tho :)
But at least i'm getting over 400Km from every fill now.

Ebola One: Octane is only one factor in how much power can be extracted from a given fuel... there are other factors that come into play.
You could in theory get more power from a certain blend of fuel that is only 91octane than you could out of 98 octane pump gas.

http://www.vpracingfuels.com/spec/TechBulletin-c12.doc <-- read the second page if you actually want to know a little bit about some of the factors

An equivalent product to the other 97.5 octane fuels currently on the market. Word on the bush telegraph is that it is coming to NZ(eventually). As usual, you pay a premium for better fuel and I'd imagine it'll be the same 5 or 6 cents as BP and Mobil charge.

They also have an even higher octane "Race" fuel...whether or not it actually makes it here is up in the air as it is even more expensive.
