Valve Sizes/ Areas 4age 16V versus 20v

Postby no_8wire » Wed May 10, 2006 6:23 pm

What size are the valves on a 16V?

What sizes are the valves on a 20v?

Intake valves that is...

Are the valves on the 20v smaller than the 16v?

Trying to work out which has more potential to flow...

Dont just consider the size of the valve to determine potential flow. The shape and size of the area around the port influences flow greatly. For this reason I am told the 16v can far out flow the 20v... I have not tested this personally though.

okay, all this info you can find yourself easily on several sites.

16v 4AGE INTAKE = 2 x 29.5mm
20v = 3 x 26.5mm

16v area = 2x pi x (29.5/2)^2
= 1367sq mm

20v area = 3 x pi x (26.5/2)^2
= 1655 sq mm
i would suggest looking for posts from Redmist about these heads, as he has flowed both types on a flow bench.. the other thing to consider is cost and availability of parts.. turboing a 16v 4age is easy, buy a 4agze, throw the super charger on trademe and ..

get custom manifolds made, bolt in a link, motec or whatever fuel/spark solution you decide on( you can keep the 4agze computer if boost is low enough), intercooler etc.. Cert if you want it roadlegal..

Turboing a 20v = all the above bits, plus pistons ($900) at least, rods are recommended if you use a blacktop motor, the quad throttles may cause you a few problems too.

Its far from impossible, but the 4agze is built for boost so is a much easier motor to do this to.

sit down, figure out your budget for all the parts and machining, and the hours you think you will need to do it then triple it.

there are a few on here that have gone down this path.. talk to them before you start your own project, they can let you know some of the pitfalls.

4agzes are over priced use a silvertop, pistons go for way less than $900 for new ze ones(plus you can inspect and freshen it up while you there). The 16v's are better n/a heads but the 20vs fine for boosting. Also no problem with quads and vac signal if you do it right

my bad, forgot that OE pistons are cheap.. just looking at prices for aftermarket 20v pistons atm.

Plenty more places doing aftermarket pistons for the 20v now.

This is not for a 4agte...

But thank you for the calcs...
Have sat down and thought/planned the build out, just finalising minor details...

I think u better go with a 16v cos its better (actually so you dont copy me  )

up to how much $ u got, you can always chagne from quads to a single throttle body easy with a custom plenum.

If you are talking about my car going.......its going real good all certed/regestered etc. bring on the 11s :D
