AC delete on 4AGE Black top

Postby 4000GT » Sat May 13, 2006 1:11 am

Anyone done it? The silver top is out of the car and black top about to go in and I want to delete the AC compressor. But how do you tension the belt? What have people done?

TIA.

Modify the PS pump mount so that it can be used as a tensioner.
If Revhead is talking about using the pull idler pulley as a push, you end up bending the shaft.... I did.
Anyway modifying the PS pump mount is much tidyier, and removes the weight of the idler and mount as well.
The answer is Helmholtz!

i just took the ac pump and the tensioner off and brought a real short belt straight from the crank pulley to the ps, then i took the top bolt out of the ps pump and it then swivels on the bottom bolt as a tensioner..works good

or you could go to pick a part and find NZ-new AE82 4AGE and borrow the tensioner and tensioner bracket, or contact Mr Revhead to source you one, as these cars came without AC and have right tensioner for the job.

the one i mean uses the pump as the tensioner, has a threaded adjustment on the back of it that pushes against the block. crude, but works
anyway looks like you have a few options :D

Warwick, could you please price up the tensioner and tensioner bracket for a non AC black top? We put it in last night, just need to get the longer throttle cable and a couple of exhaust gaskets in the tune time.

Looks like I am going for this option. I will try the wreckers... or if anyone is wrecking one, please let me know.

I couldnt find any 4a corollas with ac + ps at the wreckers, so i went DIY..

The PS bracket has 3 bolts, undo one so that the 2 remaining make a hinge. Weld up an adjuster (using old long bolt from the tensioner from the ac) and attach it using the top two bolts that secure the ps unit together..

Wa-la, I should be able to supply pics later this week when I return to the car.
