Postby WanaGo » Sun May 21, 2006 10:35 pm

Hey,

Does anyone have an Autospeed subscription, and can login and download articles etc?
There is an article on the Caldina GT-T and one of the 3S series engine. Was just wanting to know if someone had a sub already and could please grab it for me.
Issue 373 (22nd March 06) and Issue 370 (6th March 06)

When someone reads that one on the 3S engine, down the bottom it talks about the Caldina GT-T 3S-GTE engine.... It talks about the 97 version, and then about the 02 version. It says the 02 version came out with the Gen IV engine.... isnt the 97 and up versions Gen IV too, or am I mistaken?

The ’97 ST215 Caldina also benefited from VVTi and 11:1 comp. The AWD GT version kicks out 140kW and 206Nm and, later, the ST210 front-drive scored the same engine. And, to make the Caldina even more appealing, a GT-T version was released with turbocharged 3S-GTE grunt. Curiously, the Caldina GT-T’s 3S-GTE puts out slightly more power than the MR-2 or GT-4 - 191kW and 324Nm.

And the action kept coming during 1998... etc etc etc

In the late ’02 Caldina GT-T (ST256) you’ll find a fourth generation 3S-GTE boasting direct-fire ignition, a new intake manifold, revised engine internals and an integrated exhaust manifold/turbine housing. Curiously, you won’t find the VVTi system as fitted to atmo models. Power? A range-topping 191kW and 324Nm.

oh and does the 3S-GTE have VVTI etc, or does only the 3S-GE? (or neither?)....

Excuse my ignorance, still trying to find info.

Found this on 6gc.net site, for the celica.

JDM Engine Specifications
In Japan, the '94-98 Toyota Celica came with one of three engines. The SS-I came with the 3S-FE engine, the SS-II and SS-III came with the 3S-GE engine, and the GT-4 was powered by the 3S-GTE engine. In 1996, the 3S-FE engine was improved slightly to increase fuel economy and decrease vibrating noises. In 1997, Toyota introduced VVT-i to the 3S-GE engine for the 1998 Celica, which increased horsepower and torque substantially, and improved fuel economy. You can identify 3S-GE engines with VVT-i, because they have a red valve cover that says "Beams." The 3S-FE runs optimally on regular octane unleaded gasoline, but the more performance-oriented 3S-GE and 3S-GTE engines require premium octane unleaded gasoline.

Some people wonder if the 3S-GE engine will be the same as the 3S-GTE if you add a turbo to it. It will not be the same. The 3S-GE engine with VVT-i has a compression ratio of 11.0:1 and the 3S-GE without VVT-i has a compression ratio of 10.3:1, while the 3S-GTE engine has a compression ratio of 8.5:1. So to add a turbo to the 3S-GE, you would need to lower the compression through the use of internal engine parts. Below are the specifications for these engines.

Engine: 3S-FE 3S-GE 3S-GTE
Cylinders: 4 4 4
Displacement: 2.0 liters 2.0 liters 2.0 liters
Type: DOHC DOHC VVT-i1 DOHC
Horsepower: 138@6000 RPM 197@7000 RPM2 251@6000 RPM
Torque:(lbs.-ft.) 138@4400 RPM 152@6000 RPM3 225@4000 RPM
Forced Induction: None None Turbo

1 - In 1994 through 1997 Celicas, the 3S-GE did not have VVT-i.
2 - In 1994 through 1997 Celicas, the 3S-GE only produced 177 hp@7000 rpm.
3 - In 1994 through 1997 Celicas, the 3S-GE only produced 142 lbs.-ft. of torque@4800 rpm.

Yeah there are a few mistakes in the 3S article and the GT-T one is just a small road test.

ps yes I have an autospeed subscription.

Invercargill hmmm I'll be down there in a couple of weeks
