Custom Forged Piston manufacturers.

Postby RedMist » Tue May 23, 2006 11:01 pm

Need to select a good priced piston manufacturer for my new traitorous V6 project.
I want to build the first v6 cheaply and use it as a testbed. Upon proof of concept I'll develop a second much higher spec engine. Unfortunately the current pistons have little dome and I need to bump compression in the range of 13:1 as I'll be running silly duration.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. So far I have tried.

In CHCH, we have

Denco- which apparently are heavy.
Proturn- that doesnt appear to have a race history.

States
Crower, good pistons, but will be about 2.4k for a full set.
Arias, good pistons, slightly cheaper
Wiseco

Ausi
ACL, have heard good things about their bearings, but bad things about their cast pistons, hopefully their forged product is better.
anywhere in Ausi or NZ I should consider?

ACL can do custom forgies

No idea on quality or price on custom forged pistons, but there stock 20v low compression forged pistons are around $800+gst from memory.

Good price.

Have sent them an email, hopefully they can replicate a similarly good price for my custom v6 forged pistons.

I run Arias in my 4age. And those things have taken serious abuse. I'll see what they can do for me.

we run Denco ones in our 1GGTE engine in our old celica and wqe found them good. Can't comment on nthe weight of them as it was a while ago.

(They would still be in there if one of the guys who was co-driving at an enduro diddn't hook 2nd instead of 4th)

If the first engine is an experimental version they may be worth another look.

CP Pistons, we run them in all sorts of things & have never had one fail yet, & they are generally one of the lighter pistons you can buy, we even went to the trouble of designing our own for a project & only ended up 4grams lighter than what CP could offer. Don't buy them locally though, go to OZ & buy them fom Quantum, think their site is www.qri.biz.

I've always found Denco to be pretty heavy & have had some bad experiences with Proturn pistons(I've had good experiences as well though). JE Pistons are nomrally alright providing you get JE's & not SRP pistons. Else yes Arias,Cosworth,Crower but stay away from Wiseco's seen a few too many broken though around the gudgeon bosses.

The ACL forged pistons I looked at in RIPCO looked alright, but felt heavy but I'm yet to weigh one & compare it & my hand scales aren't very accurate.

These are for my custom racing 6a10 Mitsubishi. I say custom because I want to alter pin height and deck the block to suit. The piston and pin will need to be extrememly light as I currently wish to retain stock rods. In addition because of the extremely small stroke computer modling is pointing towards an extremely heavily cammed engine with a 10k rpm limit. As such every gram will count.
The early gsxr1000, r1 and zX9r and my 6a10 all have the same bore. I was hoping to modify a piston and use a motorcycle rod. However I cant find bugger all information regarding any motorcycle rod. let alone if the big end or length on the above are any where near correct.

I reccomend JE forged pistons, last time i checked it was around $1300 for 4 pistons landed in NZ. But now the dollar has changed im not sure.
Very good quality and light as well.

One manufacturer I forgot to mention was Mahle , we did an evo not long ago & the pistons we're pretty good, coated & all as standard both skirts & crown. Have no idea where to buy them from or any idea on cost.

Mahle are imported by Ralliart NZ now. You used to have to get them from OZ. They're good pistons.
