Hi guys,

How do I get the factory air filter out on my mr2? I'm pretty sure it needs to be replaced.

ok, the easiest thing to do, is try and remove the intake pipe from your airbox, to your throttle body, just unplug any hoses connected to that intake pipe along the way, there only should be a couple. that funny box in the middle is a intake resonator, designed to quiten down induction noise.

You might have to "grip and rip" to get that pipe out, then there "should" be 3 or 4 clips on each corner of that airbox, pop them all and the top should come out.

then reverse to put back in. only tool you should need is a screwdriver to undo the clamps round the intake pipe.

the plug from what i can see is your intake temp sensor as its not AFM.
It should be held in the box by a little grommet, pull it out if it gets in the way, jsut remember to put it back in.

If you're talking about that aluminium backing thats attached to the firewall, thats stock, and not for the extractors.

looks like the extractors run behind it (the backing)

Thanks for the advice AJz, I've removed everything from the throttle body up to the airbox. My panel filter was filthy - i'm going to buy a new one tommorow.

I also looked at the factory setup and did some reading. Apparently the factory resonators are only there to reduce noise:

as you can see the factory resonators are quite large and probably restrict airflow.

I'm going to get a fabricator to make me a bit of rubber / steel pipe identical to the stock system, except for the two resonators. I'll then connect my airbox to the large resonator connected to the side vent:

and connect the fabricated part between the airbox and throttle body.

I'm not sure if it'll do much, but my stock pipe has some duct tape covering a hole and i'd like to replace it.

what is the metal fitting before the throttle body connected to?

The_Lorax, i found in my previous Celica, a 3sge identical to yours, that blocking off the resonators was the easiest thing, gave the intake a throatier feel, not much diff in the butt dyno, but sounded nicer. Finding bits that plug up the holes is a bit of a mission tho.

btw, (i cant see the pic so i dont know if you know this already) its a lot easier to do up the clips on the back of teh airbox if you undo the screws and take the side panel off next to the engine cover.

Now i'm going to take out the final part of the intake and have a think about what to replace the system with.

How many bolts is this last past held on with? I can only see one from above the car:

Just so you guys know, getting to the bottom two bolts to remove the last resonator is very difficult. I undid the top bolt and swung off the resonator till the plastic mountings snapped :evil:

No, it's because you're impatient and rangy. :lol:

The whole airbox comes out in two pieces, it's easy when you take the side engine bay cover off.

N/A MR2's dont have heat issues, but what has that got to do with it having an air intake sensor?

Might I add that that 3SGE is a mapped model as well.

Oh, the fittiing plumbed in before the throttle body is the idle bypass and a cold idle solenoid. If I block it while idling the engine dies. I've put a set of stockings over the hose while I source a 15mm breather filter for it.
