Curren??

Postby callum_62 » Sat Jun 24, 2006 7:48 pm

Hi Guys,

Looking to buy a 1996 Toyota Curren. 2L Auto

61,000K's on the clock. Looks pretty standard, except the stereo is CD/MD.

Body work is in mint condition apart from one small minor scrtch on rear bumper.

Dealer is asking for $5995.

Im quite new to NZ...and I dont think we have these cars in the UK?

Cant find much info on these cars on the net - so any advice?

Need a new car pronto, and my Cynos big end bearings are fecked!

Its just a big cynos :P

The motors (3sge) are fairly bulletproof, as long as you keep oil in them... ( know of a couple that ran bearings + cranks when the oil got low, then going around corners ran dry for a second and its all over).

Other than that, they are simular to celicas for what I know/driven of them.

Others that own them can prob tell you more.

ROFL!

Hey dude, I have owned a Manual Curren ZS Sport for 3 three years now- very reliable (has never given me any problems, bar a sunroof problem), nice turn of speed when you need it and handles well.

It has the same driveline, switch gear and trim as a Celica- the same chassis, only better looking. :D

According to the World Cars annual, it was apparently built to compete against the Nissan Silvia for looks since it was outswelling both the Celica and Honda Prelude combined (they kinda forgot the silvia was RWD though...!).

You wouldn't have seen that many (if any) Currens in the UK- they weren't sold there, and was a Japanese domestic model only- they are all imports here, and of the three trips I made to the UK over the last two years, I saw only one Curren (saw a few Levins though, and they looked s***- modding market for UK has a long way to go for Japper cars :? )

If you want an auto, I have seen an auto cheaper here in Napier, (about $4800 I think), but I have no idea re: km's, mileage or whether your one has a sunroof or body kit. Personally I think the Curren looks pretty plain w/o a bodykit, but then personally I would only ever drive a manual too. If you're not fussed, buy it. If you're wanting a manual though, look around- you won't regret it!

Hi, as others have said, the Curren's a great car and a good choice if you don't need a liftback. It's based on the 6th Generation Celica platform (the one with the 4 round headlights) and is the celica coupe for the Japanese market (celica coupes weren't sold in Japan only overseas markets such as the USA), just as the Carina ED and Corona Exiv are the 4 door versions of the Celica.

With the 96 Currens there were three different engines available in the three different models (TS, XS, ZS):

TS: 4S-FE 1.8L (91.94 kw) Super economy, basic model
XS: 3S-FE 2.0L (102.97 kw) Economy model - very popular in nz
ZS: 3S-GE 2.0L (132.39 kw) Performance model - harder to find in nz

More info on currens can be found here:

http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/toyota/curren/1996_6/

Info on toyota engines can be found here:

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Pit/9975/dataBySubject/GasolineEngines.html#S-series

Mechanically, many things that fit the 6th generation celica will fit the curren; springs, shocks etc

Thanks guys.

Im no car junkie....but the price seems resonable to me.

only 61K on the clock, so pretty good.

Doesnt come with body kit, which is a shame....as i agree, looks pretty plain without one.

How much is a decent body kit installed on a Curren?

Ive always liked Curren; plainish looking car, but can be made to look mean with the right mods.

Was wanting a celica, but they all seem to be just too exoensive for my small budget right now. Atleast with the Curren, your basically getting a Celica, albeit not as nice looking.

Heres the deal with a bodykit.

I just picked up my front lip yesterday and i love it, photos up soon.

Curren bodykits are EXPENSIVE! Main reason is, no one sells em. Theyre hard to source and usually moulds will needs be made for it. Try Infinate on these forums. He made my front lip and i bought matching SSII sideskirts from a wrecker and fixed them up. TRD doesnt make the curren kit anymore either.

Thanks Gents...an ladies! :-p

Carpet Burns looks sweet - but im a poor sod...so its outwith my max!

6K limit here, as imposed by the other half!! :D

I lost out on the silver Curren too....someone bought it right before my eyes!

Glad I didnt buy it tho....needs to be black!!

Seen one at Aska cars in Grey Lynn...very cool but sold the day before. Aska also had one of the smartest looking Celicas i've seen - sold for just under $9K.

The hunt continues...damn hard to find a black one though!!
