3SG blocks

Postby GT4 20 » Sat Jun 24, 2006 7:15 pm

What are the main differences between a Gen II 3SGE block from a Celi and 3SGTE block from a 215 Caldina?

the oiling system is different from what I can tell, the ST215 engine has the filter attached to the upper part of the sump (alloy) it then has a "tin" hat below that. the 2nd gen 3SGE type block has the filter on the side, and has a one piece 'tin' type sump.

Well there's no squirters for starters.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Yep gen 3 onwards blocks had the oil squirters (both NA and turbo) whereas the gen 2 NA didnt.

The caldina 3SGTE block also has all of the reinforcing mods to prevent blocks cracking etc, which was (sometimes) problem with earlier ones.

Also sump mounted oil filter, as opposed to being on top of the oil cooler.

Caldina block will also have the allowances for the crank angle sensor, which the gen 2 block wont have. (Although the NA and turbo gen 4 blocks have a different crank angle sensor system, IIRC)

Are you considering using a celica gen 2 block?

Perhaps you might want to have a look here

Gen 4 blocks are worth the money IMO, if you're going to make a high revving NA motor.

Someone else wanted the head, so you could probably get just the block if you organised something with him.

I recall an AW11 in the targa a few years ago, running a 3sge. They went through a few blocks in their time, kept on cracking. (as they were using the gen 2 motor, IIRC)

I have a Gen IV head and a Gen II block with the option of a Gen IV block. Just wondering if the Gen IV block option was worth taking up - which it appears that it is.
Thanks for the replies.

Gary if you do wish to sell me the Gen 2 block, let me know.
