Baffling with steel wool helps with catching the oil as the oil vapour passes through it.

They're ok, if you set them up properly they assist with preventing detonation (as oil vapour slightly lowers octane), and can reduce oil smoke from the exhaust. The can removes the oil from the crankcase vapour, and if your car has done a lot of km's, and suffers from oily chuff (positive crankcase pressure due to worn rings), they're fairly helpful, just remember to regularly empty it.

They're required in motorsport, to prevent or reduce "oil-downs" due to internal failures venting oil into the intake. I believe all cars up to 2000cc require at least a 2 litre can, and anything above at least 2.5l.. and unfortunately the cheap "chrome" trademe ones are normally only of 1 to 1.5L capacity.. so only good for road use.

Hope this helps! :)

I had the problem with positive crankcase pressure on my FX-GT, i NEEDED a oil catch can otherwise the positive pressure blew my dipstick out under high load (it was a very sick little 4AGE).

Thing i did was go to the warehouse and buy a $8 all metal thermus, drilled 2 holes in it, threaded them to acomidate the valves off a air compressor and siloconed them in. Stuffed the entire thing with steel wool and put one of those mini pod filters on top.

Worked great! I believe its still in my garage after i sold the car. Might be able to post photos if interested.

Up to 2000cc, need 1L can. Over 2000cc needs 2L can. They are not required for motorsport and the minimum sizes only apply if its vented, factory systems (assuming not the old pipe to the ground style) or a plumback system have no requirements. It is only the vented ones as if the motor blows all the oil will pour out the vent and make a big mess and is a fire risk. If its dumped into the intake its less of a risk.

Did you see the pictures? What kind of engine you got? 20V?

You are hooking up pipes like in the pictures to a catch can with a filter ontop, youll need hoses, clamps, the catch can, filter, something to block up the holes on the intake pipe and manifold, and probably some mount so that the catch can actually sits somewhere in the engine bay.

thats some real life pics of one hooked up

If you have a silvertop there are two holes you want to hook up to the catch can, one of on the right hand side of the head, there is a pipe about 8-10mm in diameter that runs from the head to the intake pipe, this is one of the outlets you want to pipe to your catch can, and the hole in the intake pipe needs to be blocked up, second looking at the engine, at the top of the head thers another pipe running from the head to the intake manifold, you need to run a new pipe over to your catch can, and block up the hole that the hose used to be connected to.

Heres a website I whipped together for ya, hopefully its reasonably clear:

No worries :D

Yea you will need a catch can with 3 holes, 2 inlets (usually on the side) then one outlet at the top for the filter, i know supercheap dont have them, i had a mate search their catalogues, but your usual places like repco etc should have them, or you could get one from trademe, or support toyspeed sponsors and get one from http://www.drivenperformance.co.nz (I think they have them)

edit:

why yes, yes they do ^^^^^^

Oh yea, I would reccomend getting one of the cans off trademe, there are couple of 1 litre ones on there, for around the price of half the capacity of driven performance. $90 buy now, search for catch can on trademe. They have 3 holes, and can include a breather for an extra $15.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.asp?id=64096530 something like that, u cud post on one of his other auctions asking for one to be listed.

Eurgh, I'd recommend staying away from the ones with plastic fittings, and plastic "viewing" pipe, as they tend to leak. The first one I bought off trademe, arrived at my door with a broken plastic elbow, not what you want when its' going into a violently vibrating engine bay! I read back through the sellers feedback, a number of others had complained about them leaking, I would recommend just getting a custom one made up, to fit into your engine bay.

dirtbag, what is the other hose that comes off the other side of the intake pipe that goes over to a little 'thing' on the fire wall and then goes back accross to the head? i have it all figured out now, will get one of those cans off trademe, if the 'little plastic' bits $&#$% out ill deal with it then lol, if i leaks guess idont have to empty it as often haha

Hmm, good point, wud fitting it to the chassis, or a point thats "inside" the engine mounts be better?

Anywhere good in chch that you could reccomend for it? What kinda prices would they be.

phat_levin, do you mean this pipe (one in yellow)

Frankly, no idea, maybe someone else could shed some light on it, I cant actually remember where it does flow to, as you kinda lose sight of it as it goes under the strut bar....
