stacked resonators and resonator sizing

Postby barryogen » Thu Aug 17, 2006 3:44 pm

I assume that you can stack them as you go down the exhaust? as in from headers goes into resonator1 and from resonator1 into resonator2?

Also, if you have two that are from the same range of products... which will make it quieter, a bigger one, or a smaller one?

The reason I ask is that I have a nice 40 inch straight bit that will fit a couple of resonators into, and I was wondering whether I should get 2 19"(seems to be the biggest you can get), or some smaller ones.

1. Yes you can stack as many in there as you want without greatly affecting flow

2. Longer resonator = quieter (in theory)

3. Id be going with two 19" ones rather than say four 9.5" ones for example, mainly for cost sake.

Resonators wont make a huge difference in relation to noise, but they do reduce the 'tinny' sound. I had 3 hotdog type resonators in my 101 gtz and it was still pretty loud and still had a slight tinny sound to it. If you can, get some oval shaped resonators, these will quieten down the exhaust better than hotdog types and will remove the toyota buzz

thanks guys, I'm just getting a fair bit of exhaust work done, and at the moment I have no resonators, and twin tips and it is horridly loud(expected it really), and in the spare 40" space, resonators were always planned, but I hadn't settled on a final layout.

I might have to put something else in there if it doesnt make enough difference.

The best way is a free flow muffler, they arent very long, but will make a great difference to the noise. and make them sound good to, there are a couple available. Chase do one, and are available through repco, and Flowmasters are available through most V8 & Bogan related shops, Repco may be able to get these in also.

Theyre sweet, not very loud but have a nice sporty tone, and are free flowing.

got the two resonators(1x19" 1x16") in the car, and it has taken the noise to a very acceptable level, but I still have a bit of a drone at specific RPM points.

idle-1750 whine
2k-2750 fine
3k-3750 whine
4k-4750k fine
5k-5750 whine
from 6k onwards it roars, so accepted as loud from there to redline.

so are there specific resonance levels where the exhaust will be quieter than others, even if it is at lower revs?

I guess an exhaust place may know for sure, but I'm just after you guys thoughts.
