After market ECU Security

Just want to know, If you install a ecu and have it tuned drive around park the car then Remove the ecu ( by unplugging the loom ).

Take it with you in ya bag or somthing for security your cant be taken or they cant break in and take it so to speak, Then you get back in car click ecu back into its mount and replug in the loom.


Would the car start? Will it remember the map? tuning? or would it lose its memory like a stock on?

Removing an aftermarket ecu & carrying it round with you should be fine for the majority of aftermarket ecu's out there e.g Link,Motec etc, I've swapped ecu's from one car to another time after time without losing maps or any problems.

just get a decent alarm cliff.
it would be a pain to get to the ecu when the dash and stuff is in there anyway.

wicked that's what I wanted to hear.. matt that's an option but it has one and I would have better piece of mind.. not to mention mounted the ecu somewhat visible so it needs to be out of sight when we park..

I like where it is and secuirty of removing but... worry was would I have to take laptop to retune everything everytime I wated to secure car.

But anyways yes it'll be sweet, most if not all aftermarket ECU's have Flash ROM's or EEPROMS or some kind of non-violate RAM.

You can use this as a security measure, but I would recommend fitting a mil-spec socket to the firewall and make up a short loom from the ECU to the firewall, and unplugging that each time.

The stock ECU plugs are not designed for repeated connection/disconnection and it is an expensive proposition to have to replace the connector on the ECU. That said however, the high pin count mil-spec socket/plugs are not cheap either.

Im talking on the few times the car goes out IF i park it somewhere im going to be away and want to have added protection it wont go walkies i can get away with it without the hassle of needing laptop to re flash the map onto the ecu kinda thing.

It certainly does one helluva job of immobilising the car , Im considering the same kinda thing for my rsm, but still gota figure out a way that i can take it off and put it back on the stand easily (plug will b easier than an ecu, a whole 6 wires! or something...)

Its all non volitile memory based. The technology that holds the BIOS on your PC. Leave your PC off for a year , and it may loose the time (battery based technology) but it wont loose the BIOS. I've seen references to as little as 10 years before non-volitile memory looses charge, but I would think most would be considerably longer.

Unfortunetly nothing is fullproof - if someone REALLY wants your car, they will tow it, ECU or not.

Tis True unfortunately a lot of late model cars with all the immobilisers etc in the world end up getting stolen by people with a tow truck, they just turn up, winch it onboard & no one says shit cause they think it's just getting towed for illegal parking etc & then they take them off somewhere & have all the time in the world to get round the alarm etc.

Its not really at all going to be a security feature, its more beacuse its soemwhat visable due to its location, ( i tryed putting in glove box and all sorts but no way the loom would fit past the air con stuff etc ).

So if i parked it somewhere dodgy someone MAY be tempted to smash and grab just the ecu ( no idea why as i learnt TV do a good job securing the ecus in the event they are stolen, tracking serial numbers etc ) but it would be hassle on the day they took it getting the car home, as well as waiting for someone to try and use it so i can get it back.
