Making it lower

Postby lyric » Sun Sep 03, 2006 6:36 pm

I have a 91 trueno, ive had lowering springs put in it but its not low enough for me.... its well above legal height atm. Ive been told that to make it lower i will need to have my struts shortened and then my springs compressed. Is this right? if so does anyone know who does this is chch, i know where to get springs compressed but not sure about the struts. What sort of price shld i be looking at??

Thanks
Charlotte

if you say cut springs are illegal with out cert.. technically so are compresed springs.. coz they have been tampered with frommanufacture...

Go to Chamberlains and get them to custom make springs with the correct spring rate at x mm shorter to get to the height you want, then get them to shorten your shocks to match.
That way you get low without the uber gay cut springs ride.

check your measurments carefully

ae101/111s are suprisingly close to the legal limit stock.
50mm lowering often sees them too low for WOF.

if you have kings or dobis compressing them to close to 100mm will see you fail a wof soon.

its rangi, but not illegal,

Compressed prings are much more dangerous. Hmm lets all drop our centre of gravity, soften the spring rates and make them weaker... nice ;)

Cut them, and shorten the shocks if required, but do not compress them, complete waste of time and money, and your car will handle like shite.

Does compressing actually weaken the spring structure? I was aware they retemper them once compressed.

Either way, I still don't accept either method as a substitute for a custom wound spring or a replacement coil designed to fit into OE spring mounts.

Its got cobra springs in it, to me its low enough at the back but the front is about 1 1/2 inchs higher. Looks kinda silly being so uneven.

Yeah but you're an old coont :P

Lyric - go see Chamberlains, they can do custom springs from your measurements. Much better than compressing or cutting.

Just keep your eye open for used springs, they pop up all the time. I got some Apexi ones for my car not long ago...

Certainly cheaper than getting custom ones made, mine cost $200.

Some on TM at the moment.

I have cobra springs in my ae111, (lows or super lows), i'd not go lower as I'd not be able to park against standard height curbs or get my jack under front kit.

chamerblains make cobra springs afaik, so thats ya best option locally for custom height which is what you're after :)
