Postby escortman » Mon Oct 16, 2006 2:43 pm

hey guys
i can get my hands on a ae86 tureno shell, but has no doors, front guards, hatch or bonnet. the upside is that the shell has no rust watsoever, is straight, comes with a t50 box and has all the loom
what i am asking is how much are doors guards hatch and bonnet as i will soon be taking my fxgt off the road to strip so will have a engine so am wondering if it will be worth it

cheers

If you wanna go mad, there's also a couple of places that can do you fibreglass bits. bumpers, bonnets, doors, guards, hatches the works. Althought for a roadie I would stay away from doors.
FRP will be lighter but is also about the same price as Revhead (or more).

Hardest bit will be headlights. They'll be pricey regardless I would think...

yeh i asked a guy off trademe = each door is $440, bonnet $440 and hatch (no ducktail ) $440. Front guard, per side $290.

so its pretty much the same price as normal ones so mite get the bonnet hatch and guards as frp and get metal doors

im not saying the fibreglass doors are bad, but they are pretty impractical for road car, heard they have a few missing bits such as window rails and hole for the bit which makes the door stop opening too wide

would make alot of difference with saving all the weight though and then they wouldnt rust out

As far as I am aware there is no legal problems with frp doors because of the age of the vehicle. You can get the doors complete with mounting points for all the internals. They're even reinforced to take the extra weight of glass and winders and stuff...

My reasoning is due to one horror story where a person was driving down the motorway, and hit a bump... The bump just happened to cause enough twist in the car/door (as minute as it was) to cause the lock section of the door to break and the door was left to flap around on the hinges.
Now it was probably a freak incident. But I definitely wouldn't want that possibility on a road car.

so was this horror story in the news ? i.e. did it happen to a real person or just an old wives tale ? like the locked diffs kill your children story ?

I just spent the last week in a rally car with glass doors and they never fell off ! Probably on some roads that were a bit rougher than a bump on the motorway!!

I'm sorry for the children in the incident.

In an accident, with a cross (rally style cage) in my doors, I'm worried about the door metal doing something freaky. FRP sounds like a bloody good idea.!!!

Happened to someone a friend of mine knew.
Like I said. Probably a really freakish incident. One in a million styles.
