after being there with the same car and doing a lot of swaps that are similar to what you prepose it comes down to this.

5k any type:
pushing whole lot of shit up hill.

4age na:
never going to have the grunt. you can learn to drive, but thats it.

4agte:
this is one of the best motors you could put in the car.

3tc/3tgte:
it is the year 2006... this motor belongs in peurto rico... let it be.

3sge:
doesn't make the power... even beams.. boring after a while.. just not worth the effort.

3sgte:
this motor is just not worth the effort to install. dizzy, sump, water pipes, cooling, bellhousing...as well as being heavy.

ca18det:
it is the year 2006, although i think this motor is cool for it's time, a la fj20... it's past it, people use sr20's now for good reason... maybe you should be peurto rico's next best thing?

sr20det:
heavy... running nissan motor.. boo... yada yada...sound like tractor.. look stupid.. every sr20det powered lightish toyota has the feeling killed from what I can see... will make good power, but imho 4agte is still a better option here. sr20det lose the essence..

1uz/Xjzte:
completely kill the car... too heavy... 3sge is heavy enough.. with turbo, or comparitive motor no good... engine bay can accomodate, but kills fun of car.

something only one suggested above: 13bt:
awesome engine. should sit real well in engine bay, and tunnel should accomodate box no problem... would be up there to decide between this and 4agte.

bangalang.
sell your 3S.

i agree

13bt.. nice and light, good power, and if built well.. super reliable

or a 20b would be nice hehe

but if your not that way inclined, slap a 4agte in the bastard.. its what carinas were meant to have

with all this 4AGTE talk, we need a FAQ thread for how to build one (reliably) and how much things (generally) cost!
maybe this would stop people dreaming about how easy/cheap it is!

whats cheaper and easier for the same power?

i can't think of anything

certainly the easiest of all the options people have given (apart from a standard 4age or maybe a 5k haha)

no no no, i was meaning in general - i know of so many people (myself included) that wouldnt mind having a 4AGTE, but (some/many) people seem to think its as easy as slapping a turbo on the side

this may be a good idea in Daves case

and im sure he has thought things out in many situations ;)

haha sorry my bad, i misunderstood

i know what you mean though, its expensive enough just doing a 4age conversion without going for a turbo as well, and a faq would be dam good

I hear that 1998 is the mcguyver of turbo 4age conversions, he can do it if you give him a jar of pickles, a pringles tin and a dozen hoze clamps.

Agreed, might be an easy/cheap swap though, till I've got all of the parts necessary to do the other swap? Will make the carina a bit more fun in the meantime.
Seeing as how (from what I can gather) I only need 4AGE extractors, I can cut and shut the intake manifold, use the existing mounts/gearbox/clutch/water lines/etc from the 3AU. correct?
Already got a T series box and hydraulic clutch etc, so no worries there.

4agte:

Yeah, I'm starting to think that this could be a very fun idea. 8)

3sge:
doesn't make the power... even beams.. boring after a while.. just not worth the effort.

I think they're capable of making good power, and I've got plenty of beams 3S dyno plots that agree with me. I kind of agree on the 'boring' bit though, it wouldnt be as exciting as a 4AGTE.
I'll hopefully have a decent dyno run, next time I head to TP.

ca18det:
it is the year 2006, although i think this motor is cool for it's time, a la fj20... it's past it, people use sr20's now for good reason... maybe you should be peurto rico's next best thing?

Hmmm, any nice ladies in peurto rico? 8)
I disagree, I think this would be more or less on par with a 4AGTE? I dont see how a 4AGTE is going to have more potential, or be better. (Apart from retaining Toyotaness)

1uz/Xjzte:
completely kill the car... too heavy... 3sge is heavy enough.. with turbo, or comparitive motor no good... engine bay can accomodate, but kills fun of car.

lead tipped arrow, nuff said.

13B turbos are heavier than you'd think! (IIRC? might look into this)
I doubt it would be any lighter than a 3SGTE setup, not to mention the 3SGE.
definitely better weight distribution though, can mount em really far back.

Yep you've almost got everything, just need to get some bigger fuel lines, a better fuel pump, and wire the bastard up

Yep there's a corona EFI tank with in tank pump that bolts straight up to the rear of an AA60. 8)

the AA63 has an external fuel pump, so may be more of a PITA to use, and harder to find most probably.

I'd just need fuel line and fuel return, (can use existing line as return) easy as.

Hmmm, might see if I can find a cheap old AE82/AE92 or something. :)

it already has big enough feed, return, and breather lines. Same size as 86.
run a surge in the engine bay with a facet in the boot, or swap in an efi tank.

oh, that ca18det... was meant to say "it should be peurto rico's next best thing"..... not "you".. :P

Oh, I thought it didnt have a fuel return line, since it was/is carbed?

Excuse my ignorance.

my mate weighed his 1uz in at 175kgs
from what ive read on the net 13bt is 185kgs.

sure thats not a huge difference, but saying a 13bt is lighter than a 1uz is nonsense.

and what about the cost? 1uz can be had for under a grand.

but what would make me go 1uz? torque on tap (something you will never get with a rotor) and reliability (another thing you will never get with a rotor)

i have my doubts for that 13bt weight though, as it reckons there is only 15kgs difference between that and a non turbo one..
i find that hard to believe.
