if the crank is tight, start loosening the caps one by one till it turns.
Just what i was taught when i was working as a motor machinist for 3 years, and yes a rebuilt engine will be a little tight to begin with as the rings are scraping up and down the bores.

You do up the main caps 'tight' so everythings held in solid then as you torque them up give the crank a little give each way to make sure its still rotating :D I was taught this by my dad whos been a mechanic most of his life. We did it when replacing the bearings on my brothers 4agze.

I guess either way works. Could you explain why my method wouldnt work?

what i thought you meant was just bolt one cap on then turn and then bolt another cap on.
If you turn the crank with no caps on, you will drag the bearing out of the groove, and will have to remove the crank to refit it.

oh I see, thats not what I ment, all the caps have to be on :D , just as you torque them if the crank goes stiff the starter may not be able to turn the engine over once its all done  Need to drag the car down the road and jump start it (very rangi and not recommended)
