Just what i was taught when i was working as a motor machinist for 3 years, and yes a rebuilt engine will be a little tight to begin with as the rings are scraping up and down the bores.
You do up the main caps 'tight' so everythings held in solid then as you torque them up give the crank a little give each way to make sure its still rotating

I guess either way works. Could you explain why my method wouldnt work?
