4age starter motor compatibility

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Thu Nov 30, 2006 6:55 pm

after much searching everywhere, I cant find any solid information...
apparently 4agze starter motors are not compatible with rwd gearboxes...

so if im running a 4agze in a rwd setup with a w55, what sort of starter motor will I need? will the one fitted to my standard bluetop engine/flywheel work? or are the teeth going to be different...

cheers.

I am running a 4agze in a rwd setup with a w55 and I am using a starter motor from a n/a smallport, the solenoid/heat sheild comes close the exhaust headers. An ae86 starter motor is larger in size and has the solenoid underneath but is not as grunty as the small port starter motor.

this will be with a turbo though, so the distance between the starter and exhaust manifold wont really matter.
is the only difference really just the grunt of the starter, and the physical size of it? with the bolt holes and gears being the same?

not quite,

AW11 GZE may suit the NA versions, but the AE92 and AE101 GZE ones are definatly different mounting spacings between the holes.

Just finished conversion of 4AG-20V into DX...

After starting I think i could hear gear whine, so finished exhaust and shure enough the starter stayed engaged...

After removing it and checking measurements I appears that the starter I have is to close to the flywheel or vice versa.

Engine: 4AG-20V silver
Gearbox: AE85 K50
Flywheel: unknown origin but it fits...
Starter: unknown origin, it was marked with 3A/4AG in twink...

Anyone had this issue?
