im having trouble getting the head off now, all 10 head bolts are out, manifolds are off, thermostat off, and ive tried sticking a screw driver in the slots and all it got was a little bit of water seepage, and it got a few whacks with the rubber mallet but still not budging. any ideas?

Just done the head on my old mans Surf.

We had to leaver it off with a crowbar. The locating pins were quiet tight.

Just spray a little CRC down the bolt holes, and give it a whack with the rubber mallet, it'll free up. Wouldnt recommend using a crowbar unless you're planning on machining it!

Use

Postby andyztouring » Wed Jan 10, 2007 7:48 pm

Use a block of wood and a LARGE hammer ,tap at bolts on side of head from underneath, can be stubborn to come off.

Overheated

Postby andyztouring » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:00 pm

Most likely badly overheated and sitting with water in bore. Scrap engine and get another good one.

Looks

Postby andyztouring » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:14 pm

Looks like the bore is severely pitted ,only a rebore and oversize pistons will fix that engine.

The top photo

Postby andyztouring » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:21 pm

The photo of the bore show pitting as big chunks out of it.Should be reasonably smooth with slight honing marks.Appears to be caused by sitting around with water in the bore .
