i thought good quality street tyres would be ample for me on my first track outing. i did everything else i was supposed to, fitted good race pads etc before the track day.

then i found after about 5-6 laps my tyres started turning to jelly , it felt like they were rolling over the sidewall on corner exit, understeer was magnified 10x and under brakes the tyres felt like they would give out before the brakes would.

oh when i wasnt careful enough to not overheat them my street tyres also melted and peeled off in chunks :D one guess which tyre they were.

Good thing superlap is only one flying lap!

Bad20V
I am also trying to get into more tarmac this coming year.
But I still don't think I'll buy a set this time around.

Whats your suspension like? May have been a good thing you didnt have slicks on, you could have found yourself rolling you car on those understeer corners.

not too bad, adjustable on the rear i kept stiff as i couldnt be bothered changing from drag setup.stiff enough all round to twitch out under hard brakes and be mildly uncomfortable on the street. :?
some amount of understeer is inevitable in a highpowered frontwheel drive, especially with a mechanical lsd. i had an experienced driver in the passenger seat encouraging quite agressive lines  so the poor car ended up hauling up from 160-180km 3 times per lap.

Fast road cars going for fastest lap with minimal experience on track might for some entrants = Supercrash (sadly)

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

What it sounds like you need is a decent track wheel alignment I set my car up and have 2 seperate alignment setups for Manfield and Taupo. You'll be amazed what a decent alignment does to tyre wear. Also it sounds like your not keeping an eye on your tyre pressures I no its different according to car but tyre pressures tend to sky rocket especially with road tyres so its probably best to get a decent tyre pressure gauge I always keep an eye on tyre pressures if you don't well thats when the handling of the car comes into question...

yeah havent been taking it too serious up til now :D ive had a couple of track days to get accustomed to the lines before i start doing some more serious club stuff this year.

and yep i don t really pay too much attention to tyre pressures, as iv been using street tyres and been focussing on having a good blat rather than chasing every second  it makes it more fun when the car gets a bit loose anyway, as long as its controllable.

will keep it in mind when i set out next time tho

well, a full blown race evo with bucket loads of power and seriously fast, aka the chesters evo, the owners are trying to get a cert and wof and rego for it so that can race

it's a bit out of proportion for me, it's gone from what sounded like a really good idea, to .......... yeah.

On street tyres you'll wanna run around 40psi on a circuit, and not run for too many laps at a time. If your pressures are too low they'll just roll and you'll sledge, been there done that not fun. They over heat too quickly and become usless.

If you wana do any circuit work, r rated tyres are what you want.

Just imagine if you did keep an eye on your tyre pressures and got decent wheel alignment how much MORE FUN you would have...

i tended to get around 8 hard laps before the street tyres started going off , most noticeable under braking and thru corner exit understeer. was running ~38 last time, pretty much normal day to day pressure. was pretty happy with that for a street tyre, they showed the wear on the edges but not as bad as i expected.

getting times was kinda pointless once i realised i was wheelspinning thru 2nd gear out of every corner  should be much improved once my lsd is fixed up.

Any other Toyspeeders going to head down and have a go? Perhaps we could get some shared accomodation booked?

I'm going.

I have a work contact which I'm going to try and hit up about accomodation. His family has a holiday bach/home they rent out.
He's not at work today.

I will see what he wants, as it might work out cheaper per person if we've got the numbers.

Otherwise, I'm good to hook into any group accomodation...

Okay. Spoke to my work mate.

His bach is pretty big and really nice. It's a house so has complete facilities (two bathrooms, BBQ, fridges, cooking facilities, spa bath, A/C, TV, DVD, carport, driveway).
Can sleep about 8 people on beds (I think 10 if there are two couples), plus tons of floor space and couches.
It's just on the other side of the river, so only about 10 mins (???) from the track.

He's agreed to pencil me in for the 29th and is happy if we were to just want one night.
He's asking $150 if there's a group of us. Sooo.... it would take at least 5 people to make it worthwhile when compared to camp grounds/YHA/backpackers.
Also, I would prefer to make it a two night stay, but will bow to peer pressure.

Is anyone else interested?
