Drifting at TelstraClear Events Centre

Postby Cahuna » Sat Jan 13, 2007 8:23 pm

Got a call from my mate this afternoon, turns out he was at some drifting at the TelstraClear Events Centre in Manukau, so since it didn't clash with any motorsport I was competing at (for a change!) I decided to go down to see what all the drifting fuss was about.

What a neat event! Having now seen the drifters in action live I have to say that some of those guys have heaps of talent and would be good at any form of motorsport they wanted to turn their hands to. And as a spectacle playing to the target audience it was absolutely perfect. Well done to all involved in making it happen. I was lucky enough to be able to watch from the elevated position next to the judges (my mate was the MANS Steward for the event) so was able to have a bit of a chuckle at the intense debate going on in deciding the matchups. The winner on the day wa Mad Mike in his RX7, definitely a worthy winner.

Apparently there are demos happening there tomorrow (Sunday 14/1) if anyone is interested in going down to watch. There are also some mint cars on display inside the centre itself and rumour has it that some of the drifters might be taking passengers. $10 to get in the gate. (Sorry, don't ask me for any more info, that's about as much as I managed to pick up!)

It's got me all excited again about going racing myself tomorrow... had been feeling a bit bleh about the prospect but now I'm raring to go again

Yeah, we've got a pretty mean driver down this way who does other clubsport events in his Cefiro. When he's putting down a fast time, he's a tidy driver, in a car with plenty of wick, and some of the nicest suspension around.

deff was something to see - different to the last D1 event that wasn't held on a track.

this was the second car park event as the first was up north 2 years ago

Some nice runs went on - it was a new experience for a lot of people that have never seen drifting before - good track layout with effective canmber - also the back straight you could hold it for a bit.

Was this the MVP show that was held down there?

We have coverage of the event in the magazine next week, mostly of the show itself, didn't get any of the drifting though... damn

What sorta corse was it? I heard it was just a chicane or two?

Yeah, that will be the one (not that I had a chance to look at it, just looking at the logo on my admission pass :) ). The drifting was basically a couple of chicanes with a 180 degree hairpin between them, but there was plenty of scope to get some pace up through the chicanes, after going through the first chicane at full noise the cars were on the picks while sideways to slow down for the hairpin, you could really pick the good drivers from the average ones with the way they held hte cars on the knife-edge under braking.
