4agte + tvis on a link ecu?

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sun Jan 14, 2007 10:32 pm

i've heard mixed opinions about running TVIS on a turbo 4age, mostly because of the fact that the butterflies could get sucked into the engine or something...is that really likely to happen??

also, is it possible to run the TVIS butterflies with a link computer (lem g3) or is it more trouble than its worth?

cheers.

For your information the 3SGTE (gen1 and gen2) had TVIS.

Yeah it works well, you get good low end with the butterflies closed then open them on boost.

No reason not to run them - at least while you have a stock intake manifold anyway.

will be running stock ae86 inlet manifold so no problems there.
so can it be wired up so the butterflies are controlled by the link?

You should be able to use RPM switch to activate TVIS solenoid at ~4500rpm...

Yep, made a huge improvement to bottom end/off boost torque and response. I'm using a link plus G1 which has more aux outputs than the older v4/5's I think, but the G3 is probably better than the Link Plus G1 anyway (I haven't looked at the specs actually).

So short answer is yes it is a very good idea to run it and the G3 should have a spare rev switch to control the TVIS.

I had Speedtech tune it and what Andre did was one run with TVIS closed and one with it open and compared the graphs to find the point to switch.

From memory it was 4200rpm, but that would depend on your turbo and compression etc.

hmmm, cause i'll probably be putting tvis on my car when i go the link, lets hope the lem4 can control this.

in the manual of the lem4, it has under the features

idle speed control for two wire solenoids OR electronic boost control OR one high power drive switchable at a preset RPM or engine load

does the highlighted bit indicate that it would be able to control the tvis solenoid at the load?

You can get a kit from jaycar that will do rpm switching,
here it is:
frequency switch

I think the lem4 might not have enough outputs to be able to control cold start idle and rev switch and boost switch (unless you're using something else?)

Maybe give the supplier a call and see if there are any options to upgrade the lem4?

thats what the OR is for, meaning you can have only one of those options for that wire/s. plus i don wanna upgrade it as i got it at a good price. lol. not yet anyway

Shit you're like a hawk watching this thread  1 min response!

Cheapest option then would be the jaycar rev switch. Thats what I was going to do until I decided to just splash out on a LinkPlus.

A little OT...
In regards to normal TVIS operation. What's the order of things? When are the butterflies open and when are they closed?

Okay...
Interesting...
I'm not 100% sure I'm reading my manuals correct... But I think they're suggesting that the butterflys are closed after the switch point...
And this is the same in my Haynes manual for the bigport redtop, and for my Toyota manual for the bluetop...

I will try to post up the actual wording from the book tonight...
