mazda problems

Postby AE82 FXGT » Fri Feb 09, 2007 6:44 pm

Hey all, a mate of mine has a 1994 BH familia dohc 1.8.

The issues started when a mate of his took off an ignition lead (dizzy side) so it ran on three cylinders for a bit, the car was turned off then the lead put back on.

Ever since then the car will run rough when the accelerator is pushed full when idling. But if the accelerator is gradually eased on the car will run fine. So when full throttle from idle the car will sound almost like it's running on 3 but only in between 1000 - 2000rpm, after that it goes fine.

It also had bit of a starting issue which seems to have gone now.

I was thinking it may be the lead or the TPS, does anyone know how much resistance the lead is supposed to show?
Or how to accurately diagnose a faulty TPS?
Any other thoughts?

Thanks

probably foul'd the plug when he tried to make his car sound like a rotor.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

So I guess first step would just be new plugs and see if that makes a difference if not replace the leads.

I'll see how it goes.

for a first start before spending cash I would pull out the plugs, give then a careful clean with a fine wire brush & emry paper, and regap properly.
Then measure all lead for resistance ~25,000ohms (there is a moreindepth process that works out via length, but just do the asic 25k test).

Put back in and see if anything has changed.

If it started with him taking one off, I see no reason whay it could be the tps at all.
I'd probably 'think' plugs first with the bad one fouled as suggested above.

they are single coil and dizzy setups, not individual coil enines eh?

Yeah single coil dizzy set up.

Gona replace the plugs with new ones, probably due for them anyway, and it's only like $12 for 4.

25k would be fairly excessive. They recommend you throw them away at anything over 18. For soemthing like that car I'd expect them to be around the 10k mark. Check them all and give them a bit of a twist when checking resistance just to make sure its not reading right sometimes, but badly when on an angle or something. The longer the lead, the higher the resistance should be, but shouldn't be anywhere over 18k

i agree 25 is a lil, but many workshop manuals do state about 25k max, and 'generally' you are ok with it. was more an initial recomendation.
At the shop we used to replace anything over 15k for the more $$ services.
