4AGE alternators

Hello,

4AGE alternators have 2 plugs on them - one with a nut that the terminal attaches to and second white plug.

Does the second white plug have to be connected for the alternator to charge?

I swapped my suspect alternator (blue sticker) with a similar 4age alternator (red sticker) but for some reason the plug in my loom won't connect to the new alternator and it isn't charging.

I have an AW11 with a blacktop 20v and a 16v alternator bracket and alternator.

yes it provides power to the alternator so it can creat a magnet witch makes it charge

should only take 5 minutes to cut the plug off and work out the wiring off the alternators to work with the plug you have that fits. Thats what I did, but didnt fix my problem

The one with the nut is the main Batt supply.

the other has 3 wires which are sensing, ignition, and warning light.

If there is no power onto teh ign wire on the 3 pin plug the alternator thinks the car is turned off and wont try to charge.

That would explain my flat battery

I had a chat to Tex & showed him some photos

Apparently I had a 20V alternator mated to my 16v AW11 body loom. I'm going to go and buy a multimeter and check a few things.

Recharge the battery and check:

- When the car is running is the voltage between the terminals 13-14v?

- When the car is on but not started, is the 20v alternator getting an ignition signal (12v with voltmeter between earth and middle pin on my body loom)

- When the car is off, is there low resistance between the 'B' bolted connection on the alt and the battery?

If the alt isn't getting an ignition signal I can hopefully put my old one back in and fix my ignition wiring.

If the 20v alt is getting an ignition singal and has continuity with the battery the alternator must be toast. To fix it i'll either need to buy another 20v alternator / recondition mine or find the alternator plug off a bluetop body loom so i can solder it to my loom and connect the 16v alternator.

I was asleep in physics class so this should be interesting.

we've just encountered the same problem tonight with my car, the alternator won't seem to hold charge, so will check the ign wire on the three pin plug as matt says and see what happens hopefully it works

1-the battrie holds the charge as appose to the alternator
2-& the alternator charges it but dousent hold charge

we connected my old 16v alternator tonight using the plug off my old loom, no problems now battery holds charge, also noted the wires on a 16v alternator plug are a lot thicker than that on the 20v alternator. working fine now..
