hehe, i like the feel of the car how it rides on the road, handling charecteristics, braking ability and comfort. I mean you can drive a car with lowered suspension and have an uncomfy seat which makes it just horrible. But when the seat is comfy then it just all fades away.
In saying that i always say "geez i'd better do something about that '86 of mine", but never think of even coming close to selling it because it just gives that feeling that other cars can't when you just drive them, well used to before i took it off the road :?

yeah, i like my cars basic - i think thats why the cars i've owned have steadily gotten older and older. no ABS, no powersteering, no traction control, just me and the car... like people are saying, brings a smile to my face just to look at it - i drive alot of new cars at work too, and it makes me wish everytime that i had AC (or even a stereo) but cant beat the feeling you get actually DRIVING my car, as opposed to steering some modern clone car. that hammering heartrate from brake steer, or the rear end hanging out a bit further than intended... wouldnt trade that away in a hurry.

plus, owning a car thats old enough to have something new goe wrong just about every week means you are never wondering what to do to it next :P

Hell yeah....its great having a car with no creature comforts, that really takes some input to get around twisty areas of road.

Definatly agree with this, basics ftw, also makes the car easier to fix 8)

I love my Corona. It's a 1989 2.0GL ST171. It still out handles a lot of cars. I.E. Me and my balloons versus a levin with super strut and 17" low profiles.

Best part is pulling up beside some dick in a Honda who thinks he's the shit and absolutley owning him in my STOCK STANDARD 18 year old car with 296000KM on the clock. I beat him on the straights and the corners and then let him think he's winning to beat him again.

Then you take it on long trips, she's comfortable, you feel sweet fa of the bumps in the road. Those who live in Hamilton drive seddon road at 150KPH and tell me what bumps feel like. But you still feel the road. Ok so road noise is a bit much, but at least you get the sound of a well looked after 3S motor at around 4500-5000RPM.

Been looking at the 2AZ 2.4L Camry. But I don't think I'll sell my Corona when I get it.

I personally love my modern car - I can't quite understand why people think bad things are good things, though I can associate with modern cars being too sterile at points. I can get out of my car into an older school car and appreciate the nosiness, the awesome carby sounds, the light nimble feel, the funny starting and uneven power delivery and sometimes a bit odd handling.... but then I get back into my car, and have this big firm competant comfortable thing which just makes everything seem stupidly easy.

The thing is, the limits are all higher - but there are still limits, you just have to be going faster to find any of them...

I love cruising around and having a nice smooth 6cyl purr in the background while cruising around, the fact I can have a conversation with someone easily and if I really want to while on the road I can put my foot down a bit to get reminded of the potency of what I'm running around in - and shut the person up if I don't want them to continue talking. There are very few cars I've driven that are as "rewarding" to blat around in the open road as mine, its very untiring - reasonably economical, and there's not much out there like the experience of seeing a passing lane open up after being stuck behind a 80kph sunday driver... giving the throttle a bit of a lean on, and getting the sound and sensation of a jet aircraft spooling up and taking off. Its like cruising the open road in a private jet :D Sure it doesn't make the noises a old carby car does, but huge turbo induction noises and tuned 6cyl turbo noises have always made me feel happy haha.

I'm with Lith on this one... the creature comforts are why I love my little 2001 RunX... that and it screams like a bitch when you plant your foot.

It has it's limits, albeit they are usually outside of my abilities to recover them, so I tend to stay just inside them.

I understand the old car thing though, I still love going for a spin in my mates 70's falcon(thing).

I got my car on impulse after browsing trade me..

Why..

Quite simple who wouldnt want to own an iconic Toyota rally car?

i dont care how much it costs me, i dont care how it handles, i dont care how fast it is.. I purly care than theres only ever been 5000 made world wide and i have one of them.

"Modern" cars have curves too! They are just younger more taut curves, and modern cars are more likely to perform and less likely to have issues ;)

i like the shape of my car because you dont see too many sedans around
i dont mind too much that I spent $2000 fixing the old bigport engine just for it too eventually completely crap itself.

i do like the sound of quad throttle bodys screaming away at high revs and the way the car just keeps pulling in the higher revs
i don't think I could sell it now because I've become too attached to it haha

Theres no reason why a evo8 etc cant have charactor tho!
Chuck good coil overs in, big sway bars, agressive mechanical LSDs in the back and center, turn up the boost and she will have charactor alright. As much as any old car and be able to do everything ten times quicker :lol:

The handling and speed of a turbo 4wd does wear off after a little while.
Effortlessly reaching 200clicks plus is not as exciting as it used to be.

I dont miss my evo too much, i do view my rolla as gutless though! But shes definatly fun to drive, she handles quite well too allthough the speeds im reaching are no where near what the evo could do.
I havnt driven it much lately though, not since some c**ts tried breaking into it :twisted:

Shes going to the short taupo track next weekend though, should be a blast!! Then the trusty N/A 4age and T50 box will retire and move aside for a w55 and 4agte!

I could never do that in the evo, mods that yield actual gains cost a shitload allthough there were cool things you could do like methanol injection kits and software to rewrite and tune the ecu from home!300+kw on standard internals is becoming pretty standard for 2ltr turbos.

But i think with all cars you personally work on you become attatched, weather it is brand new or 30+ years old.

One thing, new cars have aircon!! aircon ftw! Rainy days = no foggy windows. When behind smelly cars put it on recirculate and the aircon on with a bit of heat to take the bite away and you get nice fresh seeming air, not musty warm recirculated air.
Makes the car so much more comfortable!
