options for stretched thread on driveshaft? SORTED

Postby flygt4 » Mon Mar 26, 2007 6:14 pm

it seems the thread on one of my driveshafts for the hub nut is stretched.
the thread isnt obviously damaged, but i have shown it to a fastener supplier and the thread starts off small and is noticably wider at the end when compared with a thread matching tool.

2 of the same 19mm nut that came off the shafts, now only thread half on and then lock up. a 20mm is too baggy, and the closest imperial nut doesnt work either.

anyone know any options for repairing the thread? preferably that retain the original strength. maybe sum1 on here has an engineering background or knows sumthing helpful.

Just replace the outer CV, it is the safest way. If shaft is streched it is not as strong anyway (I just can't imagine what sort of force required to streth 19mm steel shaft)...

yeah id hate to think of the forces involved.
i seem to remember it came off quite difficult, could probly force the 19mm back on with one end in the gearbox and a huge strongarm
but then its damaged anyway and is probly a bit weaker than before.

its quite common to flare the end slightley when tapping the joint out with a hammer, were the joints tight in the hub?

the thread probley isnt stretched its probley squashed from whacking it.

sometimes the thread looks mint but can actually be flared enough so you cant get it started, you can just take it down with a die grinder and then tidy it up with a thread file, Ive done sh*t loads like this and never had a problem.

for the few that have been quite bad, Ive just tacked the nut to the joint with the mig for extra precaution

if you get stuck bring it into work and ill have a look for you.

cool, already cleaned it with a wire brush and it only improved it by about 1/8 of a turn. bloody things are being a pain in the ass

don't spose you have any of the larger e series hub nuts lying round ur work either? they are about a 21 i think. my new driveshaft has the larger thread whereas my old ones both had the smaller thread, so im short one nut  i tihnk they are fairly generic as i grabbed a couple from the garage down the road that both fit, but the one they gave me were both damaged haha.

don't bodger it!!

have seen ST190 Corona axles that streched to the point of parting company. car owner was curious as to what the rattle in the front hub was. after studying it for a bit, i realised it had been 90% parted for a long time as it was quite rusty.

god knows what could have happened if the bearing had collapsed.

I kinda like the hub staying on thanks  especially considering the forces likely to be applied to it

i already has a wheel come off once, while it was interesting , im not rushing to repeat the experience.

problem solved. :D

True-No-Turbo managed to get the thread to take a nut again , and i also managed to source another nut for my other new shaft while i was there.
hopefully its the last annoyance to getting it finished.
